An interventional device configured for placement in or near an internal organ or tissue is provided. The interventional device includes a reference portion having three or more sensor elements. In one implementation, the interventional device and associated sensor elements provide dynamic referencing of the internal organ, tissue or associated vasculature after registration of the sensor data with images and/or volumetric representations of the internal organ or tissue.

A method for processing an image of a body region is provided, the region comprising a plurality of vessels capable of propagating a fluid of the body, the image comprising a plurality of pixels each being associated with an intensity. The method comprising determining, for each pixel, a probability that the pixel belongs to a vessel, based on the intensity of the pixel; simulating a propagation of the fluid from at least one source pixel towards the pixels of the image, the propagation being simulated to have a velocity that is function of the probability that the pixels of the image belong to a vessel; and inferring from the simulation a propagation time between the source pixel and each of the pixels of the image.

A system to navigate an image-guided object traveling in an area of interest of an imaged subject in relation to an acquired image of the imaged subject as created by an imaging system is provided. The system includes a navigation system to track movement of the object in the imaged subject in spatial relation to a navigation coordinate system, and a controller. The controller is operable in detecting an image of the object in the at least one image of the imaged subject, calculating a spatial relation between the location of the image of the object and a tracked location of the object, and modifying the spatial relation of the image coordinate system relative to the navigation coordinate system so as to reduce the difference between the location of the image of the object and the tracked location of the object by the navigation system.

System and method of navigating an object in an imaged subject

A system for navigating an image-guided object through an imaged subject supported on table in relation to an image acquired by an image detector is provided. The system includes a first tracking element attached to the patient, and a second tracking element attached at the table. The first and second tracking elements define first and second coordinate systems. A controller is operable to register the second coordinate system with a third coordinate system defined by the image detector, measure a spatial relation between the first tracking element and the second tracking element, register the first coordinate system with the third local coordinate system defined by the image detector based on the spatial relation between the first and second tracking elements, and generating a composite image comprising a virtual image of the object in spatial relation to the image of the imaged subject acquired by the image detector.

The element of interest is then located on the basis of the positions of the two homologous regions.

Method for locating an element of interest contained in a three-dimensional object, in particular during a stereotactic investigation in the X-ray examination of the breast

A process is disclosed which involves automatic position-finding for a point of interest of an object that exhibits high contrast as compared with surrounding tissues, the process being carried out by means of a stereotactic photographic device that includes a digital image acquisition system. The process includes a number of steps for each image belonging to the pair of stereotactic images. An initial analysis of a histogram of the image pixels are made, and a subsequent determination is made of a threshold corresponding to the difference between the high contrast objects and the surrounding tissues. A subsequent determination is made of the threshold of the image, in order to obtain a binary image incorporating two gray levels. This is followed by the filtering of the threshold determined image in the preceding step, based on morphological criteria of the object in which the point of interest is located. This operation is designed to obtain a segmented projection of the object of interest. This is followed by the localization of the point of interest in the image reference mark. Utilization of the process is for stereotactic examinations performed during mammography.

In order to analyze an image, a search is made, for all the minima of the image, for the dynamic of these minima. When the dynamic of these minima is small it corresponds finally to noise. If this measured dynamic is large, the minimum is regarded as being representative of a sufficiently significant irregularity in the image signal.

Method of image analysis

To carry out an automatic processing operation on radiographic images in mammography, it is shown that it is possible to correct the harmful effects of the linearity defect of the characteristic curve of sensitivity of the radiographic film used for this radiograph by making a statistical study of the noise in this image. It is shown that this statistical study enables the correction elements to be deduced directly using a top hat transformation. The processing is then independent of any prior knowledge that might be had of the sensitivity of the film or of the conditions in which the examined radiographs were acquired as well as subsequently developed.
