Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described for radio frequency (RF) exposure limit compliance using uplink duty cycling. A user equipment (UE) may transmit a buffer status report (BSR) that indicates an amount of data that is to be transmitted by the UE, where lower priority data reported in the BSR may be throttled in order to reduce an amount of uplink resources associated with the lower priority data and thereby adjust an uplink duty cycle of the UE. The reduced uplink duty cycle may provide for additional transmit power that is available for higher priority data transmissions.

Techniques for managing exposure using uplink duty cycling

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may identify an available energy for uplink transmission of a plurality of communication links of the UE. The UE may configure, from the available energy, a first set of energy allocations for the plurality of communication links. The UE may configure a second set of energy allocations for one or more communication links of the plurality of communication links, wherein the second set of energy allocations are allocated from a remainder of the available energy after the first set of energy allocations are allocated. The UE may transmit based at least in part on at least one of the first set of energy allocations or the second set of energy allocations. Numerous other aspects are described.

Techniques for per communication link energy reservation

Various aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to wireless communication. In some aspects, a user equipment (UE) may allocate a first amount of power to one or more radios for a time window based on radio frequency (RF) exposure information and one or more other criteria. The UE may allocate a second amount of power to a selected channel or communication utilized by at least one radio of the one or more radios for one or more time frames within the time window based on the first amount of power allocated to the at least one radio for the time window. The UE may transmit the selected channel or communication based on the first amount of power or the second amount of power. Numerous other aspects are described.

Allocation of transmit power in compliance with RF exposure requirements

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may identify that uplink data is available for transmission at the UE prior to a scheduling request occasion. The UE may skip transmission of a scheduling request during the scheduling request occasion based on identifying that an uplink grant is pending. The UE may transmit at least a portion of the uplink data to a base station using a resource allocation indicated by the uplink grant. Alternatively, the UE may transmit the scheduling request to the base station during a first scheduling request occasion. The UE may initiate a retransmission timer based on transmitting the scheduling request. Accordingly, the UE may skip retransmission of the scheduling request during a second scheduling request occasion that is subsequent to the first scheduling request occasion based on the retransmission timer.

Techniques for skipping scheduling requests

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. A user equipment (UE) may receive, via a first carrier associated with a first radio access technology, at least a first uplink grant from a base station. The UE may implement one or more backoff schemes. For example, the UE may transmit, using resources indicated by at least the first uplink grant, an uplink message based on a temperature of one or more components of the UE satisfying a threshold, the uplink message including a transport block (TB) indicating data, a buffer status report (BSR) associated with the data, one or more padding bytes different from the data, or any combination thereof. The UE may monitor for at least a second uplink grant from the base station during a first time period based on transmitting the uplink message.

Techniques for shared channel backoff procedures in wireless communications systems

Techniques for wireless communications are described. Control information used to preschedule communication resources may be received and communications may be performed based on the control information using a prescheduling technique. A scheduling type used for the control information may be determined using configuration information, an indication included in the control information, or both. A wireless device that is prescheduled communication resources may not start or not restart an inactivity timer based on the received control information. Also, a wireless device that is prescheduled communication resources may not start a retransmission timer based on the received control information. Additionally, a wireless device that is prescheduled communication resources may also refrain from transmitting a scheduling request based on a duration until a next instance of prescheduled communication resources is expected to occur.

Techniques for scheduling communication resources

Certain aspects of the present disclosure provide techniques for configuring a device-configured split data threshold for utilizing split data radio bearers (DRBs). A method that may be performed at a user equipment (UE) includes setting a device-configured split data threshold to a value that is less than or equal to a network-configured split data threshold value in response to the network-configured split data threshold value being greater than a first buffer threshold value associated with a data buffer of the UE, monitoring an amount of data in the data buffer, and triggering a first scheduling request (SR) associated with a first communication link and a second SR associated with a second communication link in response to the amount of data in the data buffer being greater than the device-configured split data threshold value.

Split data threshold adjustments in a wireless wide area network (WWAN)

This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer-readable media, for managing scheduling requests (SRs) in a user equipment (UE) that supports a split data radio bearer (DRB). In some aspects, the UE may trigger a first SR for a first communication link and a second SR for a second communication link in response to determining that a first amount of data in the UE data buffer is greater than a first threshold. The UE may transmit the first SR to a first base station (BS) via the first communication link. Prior to transmission of the second SR, the UE may determine whether a second amount of data in the UE data buffer is less than a second threshold. The UE may cancel the second SR in response to the second amount of data in the UE data buffer being less than the second threshold.

Scheduling request (SR) management for split data radio bearer (DRB) in a wireless wide area network (WWAN)

In an aspect, a user equipment (UE) may receive an uplink (UL) grant (e.g., dynamic UL grant, UL configured grant (CG)) from a network, but may decide to skip the UL grant altogether or not transmit any user plane data on the UL grant. In such instances, the UE may maintain or expedite expiration associated with one or more timers (e.g., discontinuous reception (DRX) and bandwidth part (BWP) inactivity timers, secondary cell (SCell) deactivation timer, etc.). The UE may also maintain or expedite expiration associated with one or more timers if it receives downlink (DL) transmission (e.g., DL semi-persistent scheduling (SPS)) from the network that includes no user plane data.

Timers and uplink skipping

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described. In some wireless communications networks, a device, such as a user equipment (UE), may be configured to detect a signal blockage affecting one or more antennas of the UE. The signal blockage may be associated with the position of a body, such as a user, relative to the one or more antennas of the UE, which may include how a user places their hand on or near the device during use. The position of the body may block one or more of the antennas of the UE, causing increased signal attenuation and decreased communications performance. The UE may be configured to signal, an indication based on detecting the signal blockage.

User-involved antenna management

Aspects relate to using less than all of an allocation for sending information. For example, a first device such as a user equipment (UE) may receive a grant from a second device such as a base station (e.g., a gNB) where the grant identifies resources and/or a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) allocated to the first device for a transmission. Due to one or more factors, the first device may elect to not use all of the allocated resources and/or may elect to use a lower MCS value. In some implementations, the first device may send an indication of this election to the second device. In some implementations, the first device may send information in a first subset of the allocated resources and apply puncturing to a second subset of the allocated resource.

Modified use of a grant allocation

A method of wireless communication by a user equipment (UE) includes receiving a number of uplink grants from a base station. The method further includes estimating a payload size for data to be transmitted from a UE buffer for a number of logical channels. The payload size corresponds to a sum of a number of data bytes to be transmitted and an amount of overhead bytes to be transmitted. The method still further includes determining a subset of the number of uplink grants to use for uplink transmission based on reducing a total padding size associated with transmitting the payload size, for each combination of the number of uplink grants. The method also includes transmitting the data from the UE buffer within a number of transport blocks, to the base station. The number of transport blocks corresponds to the subset of the number of uplink grants.

Power optimized uplink grant skipping

Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communications are described for handling uplink grants that have associated uplink transmission that may exceed exposure limits. Exposure limits may be based on maximum permissible exposure (MPE) limits of millimeter wave transmissions and may be determined at a user equipment (UE) and provided to a base station. If the UE receives an uplink grant for a transmission in which an associated uplink transmission would exceed the exposure limits, the UE may drop the uplink transmission prior to forming a transport block, transmit control signaling to the base station to indicate the exposure limits at the UE, or combinations thereof.
