Reconstruction in positron emission tomography is performed with partially known attenuation. A PET-CT scanner is used to generate a PET image with time of flight emission information. To limit x-ray dose while providing increased sensitivity at the ends of the CT volume in the PET image, attenuation coefficients for oblique LORs passing outside the CT volume are determined from the time of flight emission information. The attenuation coefficients for LORs within the CT volume are derived from the CT data. An objective function may be maximized for the emission distribution without reconstructing the attenuation distribution.

Reconstruction with partially known attenuation information in time of flight positron emission tomography

Methods and systems for reconstructing a nuclear medical image from time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging data are disclosed. Measured three-dimensional (3D) TOF-PET data, including direct two-dimensional (2D) projections and oblique 3D projection data, are acquired from a PET scanner. A model 3D image is preset, a modeled 2D TOF sinogram is generated from the model 3D image, and a modeled 3D TOF sinogram is generated from the 2D TOF sinogram based on an exact inverse rebinning relation in Fourier space. The model 3D image is corrected based on the 3D TOF sinogram and is provided as the reconstructed nuclear medical image. Techniques disclosed herein are useful for facilitating efficient medical imaging, e.g., for diagnosis of various bodily conditions.

System and method for 3D time of flight PET forward projection based on an exact axial inverse rebinning relation in fourier space

Axial rebinning methods are provided for 3D time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET), based on 2D data rebinning. Rebinning is performed separately for each axial plane parallel to the axis of the PET scanner. An analytical approach is provided that is based on a consistency condition for TOF-PET data with a gaussian profile. A fully discrete approach is also provided, wherein each 2D TOF-PET data is calculated as a linear combination of 3D TOF-PET data having the same sinogram coordinates s and &#x3c6;.

Discrete axial re-binning of time-of-flight positron emission tomography data

Fast reconstruction methods are provided for 3D time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET), based on 2D data re-binning. Starting from pre-corrected 3D TOF data, a re-binning algorithm estimates for each transaxial slice the 2D TOF sinogram. The re-binned sinograms can then be reconstructed using any algorithm for 2D TOF reconstruction. A TOF-FORE (Fourier re-binning of TOF data) algorithm is provided as an approximate re-binning algorithm obtained by extending the Fourier re-binning method for non-TOF data. In addition, two partial differential equations are identified that must be satisfied by consistent 3D TOF data, and are used to derive exact re-binning algorithms and to characterize the degree of the approximation in TOF-FORE. Numerical simulations demonstrate that TOF-FORE is more accurate than two different TOF extensions of the single-slice re-binning method, and suggest that TOF-FORE will be a valuable tool for practical TOF PET in the range of axial apertures and time resolutions typical of current scanners.
