In order to protect the passengers of an airplane against the effects of depressurization of the cabin, breathing masks are fed with oxygen at a rate which is an increasing function of cabin altitude. Oxygen is fed via a constriction and an economizer bag, and an initial fraction only of the gases breathed out is caused to be re-breathed by collecting the initial fraction in a flexible re-breathing bag in communication with the mask. The re-breathing bag has a volume in inflated state which is not less than the total dead volume of the respiratory tract and the mask. A protective apparatus comprises a feed control unit supplying an adjustable flow rate to masks connected to a general pipe via respective economizer bags. A re-breathing bag retards re-breathing and stores only an initial fraction of the gases breathed out on each exhalation.

Method and apparatus for protecting the passengers of an airplane against hypoxia

The demand regulator has a duct communicating a pressurized breathing gas admission with a tube connected to the inside of a breathing mask. Dilution air may be added to the breathing gas. A breathe-out valve opens from the tube to atmosphere. A manual control member has a normal position causing operation without an over pressure above atmosphere and with dilution and an emergency position causing the tube to be fed with pure breathing gas (typically oxygen) at high pressure. Operation with over pressure gas feed is prevented mechanically or pneumatically so long as the mask is being stored.

Individual respiratory gas supply device comprising a respiratory mask and a facial respirator of the cannula or respiratory flexible oro-nasal shell type for comfortably supplying a subject with respiratory gas during a high-altitude flight. The respiratory mask and the facial respirator are adapted so that in the event of de-pressurization or the presence of toxic gases, the subject equips himself with the respiratory mask possibly after having previously removed the facial respirator. Switching means make it possible to cut off the oxygen supply of the facial respirator and dispense oxygen to the regulator when the subject is equipped with the respiratory mask.

The invention concerns a protective breathing equipment comprising a respirator provided with a regulator designed to be connected to a source of breathing mixture under pressure and a harness having at least an extensible strap whereof the ends are connected to the respirator and comprising an element temporarily inflatable with the pressurised breathing mixture to extend the strap until it reaches a sufficient dimension to enable the user to engage the harness on his head and capable of being emptied to enable the strap, to press the respirator against his face. A flexible envelope covering the head is tightly fixed to the single strap or to the upper strap of the harness and fixed to the respirator; it is transparent at least in the portion opposite the eyes when the equipment is worn.

The breathing protection equipment includes a mask having an inflatable harness and a demand regulator with three operating modes which are manually selectable. The operating mode is indicated to the wearer of the mask by a repeater. The repeater has a mode sensor carried by the mask and a mode indicator located in the field of view of the wearer and driven by the mode sensor. The mode sensor may detect the position of the switch actuated by the user for changing the mode. The mode indicator may be a display on a mask storage box or on the mask.
