A system and process for treating water wherein water to be treated is directed to an inlet zone and from the inlet zone to a mixing zone. A flotation zone receives water from the mixing zone. A clarified water collection area is disposed adjacent the flotation zone for receiving clarified water from the flotation zone. There is provided one or more spray nozzles disposed in the mixing zone for injecting pressurized water into the mixing zone and generating air bubbles in the mixing zone such that the air bubbles are mixed with the water to be treated. A perforated plate separates the inlet zone and the mixing zone and includes an array of openings through which water to be treated passes as the water to be treated moves from the inlet zone to the mixing zone. The openings in the perforated plate give rise to a homogeneous mixture of the water to be treated and the air bubbles that result from the pressurized water being injected into the mixing zone by the one or more spray nozzles. Suspended matter and particulate in the water agglomerates around or with the air bubbles and the air bubbles carry the suspended matter and particulate to the surface of the water to be treated. Once the water and air bubbles reach the flotation zone, the air bubbles with the associated suspended matter and particulate can be removed from the surface of the water by a flotation process.

A gravitational separation device for purifying water includes a basin for receiving and holding the water. The basin includes an internal wall. At least one supply channel is provided to the periphery of the basin for providing water to the basin. A plurality of openings is provided in a bottom or floor portion of the supply channel. Disposed under the openings is a plurality of deflector plates. A skirt spaced from the internal wall of the basin is inclined towards the interior of the basin at an angle of approximately 5&#xb0; to 80&#xb0;. A discharge channel is provided for discharging liquid from the basin, and there is also provided a device for discharging suspended particles.

Gravitational separation device for water treatment

An untreated flow of waste water is normally introduced into a plain sedimentation unit during plain sedimentation periods to separate it into sand and a flow treated by plain sedimentation. During other periods, for example periods of heavy rain, a coagulating agent, ballast sand and a flocculating agent are introduced. The coagulated flow is passed into a maturation intermediate area and then, with substantially all the sand and colloids of particles attached to it, into the plain sedimentation unit. Here effluent is separated by plain sedimentation and evacuated and sludge made up of the sand and the adhering colloids and particles is extracted and evacuated via an extraction system and the sand outlet channel of the plain sedimentation unit. The sludge is collected, the ballast sand is separated from it to be recycled into the sand injection area and the sludge and excess sand are extracted.
