Novel formulations containing a non-oxidative biocide, such as DBNPA, and a source of an in situ produced active biocide, such as a concentrated aqueous solution of an inorganic halide salt, are disclosed. These novel formulations are particularly effective in the treatment of water, and are characterized by high stability, desirable rheological properties and an excellent biocidal activity.

A method for the preparation of p-fluorophenol by the alkaline hydrolysis of p-bromofluorobenzene in the presence of a copper-containing catalyst at an elevated temperature under pressure, the alkaline agent being a strong base, characterized in that said p-bromofluorobenzene, copper-containing catalyst and strong base are contacted with water where at least the base is gradually added to the reaction zone at an essentially uniform flow rate such that the addition of the base lasts at least the time required to complete the reaction in a batch operation, and less than 12 hours, and the molar ratio of the base is between 1.8 to 3 with respect to said p-bromofluorobenzene.

Process for the preparation of para-fluorophenol

In a process for the preparation of substituted maleimides the corresponding amines are reacted with maleic anhydride and the thermal imidization of the resulting substituted amic-acids is effected in a mixed apolar/polar aprotic solvent medium in the presence of an acid catalyst, a substantial portion of the apolar solvent is subsequently selectively removed from the reaction mixture and most of the final product is precipitated.

Process for the manufacture of substituted maleimides

A process for the preparation of dibromomethane is described, in which gaseous methyl bromide and bromide are reacted as temperatures of 300.degree. C. or higher. The reaction is highly selective to DBM and almost quantitative Br.sub.2 conversion is obtained in the absence of catalysts.
