A holographic system comprises an image processor, a hologram calculator and a display driver. The image processor is arranged to determine first and second secondary images by sampling the pixel values of a primary image at a regular array of sampling positions. The hologram calculator is arranged to determine a hologram of each secondary image. The display driver is arranged to display each hologram in rapid succession on a display device, first and second times, so as to reconstruct each secondary image from the respective hologram such that respective first and second arrays of image pixels corresponding to the primary image are perceivable. Image pixels of the reconstruction of the second secondary image are interposed between image pixels of the reconstruction of the first secondary image in the first direction.

Systems and methods for holographic projection

A method and system for improving the control of a holographic projection system in order to meet, or to attempt to meet, one or more targets or aims for a holographically reconstructed image that is produced by the holographic projection system. The target, or aim, may concern the luminance of part or all of the holographically reconstructed image.

Holographic projection

A holographic projector comprises an image processing engine, a hologram engine, a display engine and a light source. The image processing engine is arranged to receive a source image for projection and generate a plurality of secondary images from a primary image based on the source image. The source image comprises pixels. Each secondary image may comprise fewer pixels than the source image. The plurality of secondary images are generated by sampling the primary image. The hologram engine is arranged to determine, such as calculate, a hologram corresponding to each secondary image to form a plurality of holograms. The display engine is arranged to display each hologram on the display device. The light source is arranged to Illuminate each hologram during display to form a holographic reconstruction corresponding to each secondary image on a replay plane. The primary image is selected from the group comprising: the source image and an intermediate image.

A method of holographic projection includes projecting at least one calibration image. The method includes performing the following steps for each calibration image in order to determine a plurality of displacements vectors at a respective plurality of different locations on the replay plane: projecting the calibration image onto the replay plane using a first colour holographic channel by displaying a first hologram on a first spatial light modulator and illuminating the first spatial light modulator with light of the first colour; projecting the calibration image onto the replay using a second colour holographic channel by displaying a second hologram on a second spatial light modulator and illuminating the second spatial light modulator with light of the second colour, the first and second hologram corresponding to the calibration image; determining the displacement vector between the light spot formed by the first colour holographic channel and the light spot formed by the second colour holographic channel; and pre-processing an image for projection using the second colour holographic channel in accordance with the plurality of determined displacement vectors.

A holographic projector comprises an image processing engine arranged to, a hologram engine and a display engine. The image processing engine is arranged to receive a source image for projection. The source image comprises a first colour component and a second colour component. The image processing engine is further arranged to form a first colour secondary image from the first colour component by nulling alternate pixel values of the first colour component in accordance with a first checkerboard pattern. The image processing engine is further arranged to form a second colour secondary image from the second colour component by nulling alternate pixel values of the second colour component in accordance with a second checkerboard pattern. The first checkerboard pattern is opposite to the second checkerboard pattern. The hologram engine is arranged to determine a first colour hologram corresponding to the first colour secondary image and a second colour hologram corresponding to the second colour secondary image. The display engine is arranged to form a first colour holographic reconstruction from the first colour hologram and a second colour holographic reconstruction from the second colour hologram.

Holographic projector

There is provided a driver for a spatial light modulator. The spatial light modulator comprises [m&#xd7;n] pixels. The driver is arranged to receive input holograms each comprising [x&#xd7;y] pixels, wherein m&#x2265;x and n&#x2265;y. The driver is further arranged to drive the spatial light modulator to display thereon output holograms each comprising [m&#xd7;n] pixels by tiling each input hologram onto the pixels of the spatial light modulator to form an output hologram corresponding to each input hologram using a tiling scheme. The driver is arranged to use a first tiling scheme to display a first output hologram and a second tiling scheme to display a second output hologram. Each output hologram comprises a plurality of tiles of the input hologram. Each tiling scheme defines the size of each tile and the position of each tile on the pixels of the spatial light modulator.
