Embodiments of a process for estimating a rotational speed of a rotating component and a process for estimating an acceptable rotor imbalance of a rotating component are provided herein. The process for estimating the rotational speed of a rotating component for a charging system comprises measuring a vibration signal of the rotating component by means of a sensor; and identifying harmonic train members from a plurality of peaked components of the vibration signal. Further, the process comprises determining a candidate fundamental frequency from the harmonic train members; and determining a derived vibration amplitude value from the vibration signal. This determination involves a filtering of the vibration signal, removing periodic contributions having a high amplitude. A scalar value is then derived from the filtered signal as a derived vibration amplitude value, representing the integrated total vibration amplitude of the filtered signal at the current speed. The process comprises verifying a consistency condition between the derived vibration amplitude value and the candidate fundamental frequency using a predetermined speed-amplitude map, associating speed values with their respective derived vibration amplitude values. For determining an acceptable rotor imbalance, a speed-amplitude map obtained at a time when the imbalance is acceptable is compared to a speed-amplitude map at a later point in time. An offset between the maps may indicate an inacceptable imbalance.

Measurement signals varying in time are downloaded as spectrograms to a computer memory. Using a predetermined criteria a set of designated peak values is created. Using another predetermined criteria the set of designated peak values is divided into two subsets. Then in one of the subsets, peak groups differing from each other by the basic frequency values are distinguished. The second subset, created from the set of designated peak values, is searched for the presence of sidebands for peaks from each specified peak group and if the sidebands are present the basic frequency of the sidebands is calculated. Then the existence of a defect in the technical equipment is detected, and identified by comparing the basic frequencies and the basic frequencies of the sidebands with the frequency values collected in the computer memory.

The present invention relates to a method of determining speed of rotation of a motor. The method involves collecting samples with a measuring sensor at a sampling frequency, set on the basis of mechanical vibration of the motor, for the duration of a measurement period and storing the samples in the memory of a data carrier as measurement data of a fixed format. The speed of rotation of the motor is determined from the measurement data by determining the cycle length of a periodic vibration signal in the time domain by means of a maximum likelihood estimate calculated by maximizing a maximum likelihood function adjusted to the measurement data, the speed of rotation being obtained from the frequency point where the maximum likelihood function obtains its maximum value.
