Various embodiments provide advertising that is aware of digital coupon states and user states. Digital coupons can be issued to users and redeemed with third party retailer systems and/or point of sale systems. An advertisement including a digital coupon to be presented to a user is determined. Data encoding the advertisement is sent to the third party retailer system or the point of sale system.

Advertisements responsive to coupon states

Various embodiments provide advertising that is aware of coupon states and user states. An advertisement to be presented to a user is determined. One of multiple versions of the advertisement is generated based at least in part on a state associated with the user and/or a state associated with a digital coupon for an item. One or more of the versions present the digital coupon. Data encoding the generated version of the advertisement is sent to a client associated with the user.

Architectures and techniques are configured to distribute and activate payment cards. The techniques include providing payment cards to distributors, who then sell or distribute these cards to other users. Each of these payment cards may include activation information for activating the card as well as redemption information for redeeming a value associated with the card. The distributor may activate a card by, for instance, taking a picture of or scanning an identifier on the card and sending this image to a provider of the card. In response, the provider may activate the card.

Payment cards

A host-managed gift card program may enable merchants to offer and redeem gift cards without integrating a gift card program with a point of sale (POS) system used by the merchant. The merchant may rely on a host, at least in part, to issue gift cards, manage a ledger, assist in redemption of gift cards when the cards are redeemed at the merchant's location, and perform other gift card-related tasks for the merchant.

Personalizing a gift instrument by customizing the presentation and redemption for a gift instrument recipient. A gift instrument purchaser or other data source associates customization information such as redemption recommendations, restrictions, or other content with the gift instrument based on the gift instrument recipient. The customization information is presented to the gift instrument recipient upon redemption of the gift instrument. In an embodiment, information about the redemption by the gift instrument recipient is provided to the gift instrument purchaser.
