Method and apparatus for operating an exhaust-gas catalytic converter () of an internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder (Z-Z) and one exhaust-gas section (), in which the exhaust-gas catalytic converter () and a lambda probe () downstream of the exhaust-gas catalytic converter () are arranged. A characteristic value which is representative for the NOx concentration is determined as a function of a measured signal (VLS DOWN) of the lambda probe ().

Method for operating an exhaust-gas catalytic converter of an internal combustion engine

In relation to a jump (SP_J_LR) from a lean air-to-fuel ratio to a richer air-to-fuel ratio, a measurement signal of the exhaust gas probe is detected after a predetermined lean-to-rich delay (t_R) as a lean-to-rich signal value (SV_LR) and is placed in relation to a lean-to-reference signal value (L_REF). In relation to a jump (SP_J_RL) from a richer air-to-fuel ratio to a leaner air-to-fuel ratio, the procedure is performed equivalently. Depending on the lean-to-rich and lean-to-rich signal value put in relation, either an asymmetrically aged or non-asymmetrically aged exhaust gas probe is detected.

Method and device for monitoring an exhaust gas probe

During a first driving cycle, a combustion process is controlled in at least one combustion chamber for the purpose of performing a check on an emission reduction system of an internal combustion engine. During a second driving cycle following the first cycle, a check is performed to establish whether an error in the emission reduction system was detected during the first cycle. An idle time between the first and the second cycles is determined, in the event of an error of the emission reduction system detected during the first cycle. During the second cycle, the combustion process in the at least one combustion chamber is only controlled for the purpose of the check on the emission reduction system, in the event of an error detected in the emission reduction system during the first cycle and in the event of the idle time being longer than a pre-determined repair time.

Method and device for operating an internal combustion engine

An engine-controlling unit/method for an internal-combustion engine with first and second combustion-chamber groups having a first and second catalytic exhaust-gas converter, respectively, having (a) a master control device that controls a combustion-air ratio for the first combustion-chamber group by forcibly exciting the first combustion-chamber group, further having (b) a slave control device that controls a combustion-air ratio for the second combustion-chamber group by forcibly exciting the second combustion-chamber group, and further having (c) a data link between the master and slave for control through the master. It is proposed (d) for the master to transmit a synchronizing signal to the slave over the data link during changeover between the rich and lean combustion-air ratio within the scope of forced excitation, and (e) on receipt of the synchronizing signal from the master for the slave to change over within the scope of forced excitation between the rich and lean combustion-air ratio.

Engine-controlling unit and engine-controlling method for an internal-combustion engine

Depending on a trim controller diagnosis, a suspicion marker for an asymmetric ageing of the exhaust gas probe is allocated either a 'true' value or a 'false' value and, if the value of the suspicion marker is &#x201c;true&#x201d;, a dynamic diagnosis will be performed based on the exhaust gas probe's measuring signal, on the basis of the results of which diagnosis either an asymmetrically aged or a non-asymmetrically aged exhaust gas probe will be detected.
