Systems and techniques are disclosed for predictively selecting media content items and providing the predicted media content items to a cache. A media client may be in communication with a cache and detect the media content items stored on the cache. Based on the detection, a media content user interface may be modified and may contain the cached media content items or links to the cached media content items.

Local client discovery for content via cache

A method for recording linear content and delivering it for time-shifted viewing is described. The linear content may be recorded live by the content delivery system in response to user requests. The content delivery system divides the recording into at least two portions, the first portion of sufficient duration to permit real time continuous playback of the recorded content on the customer premises equipment (CPE) if the first portion has previously been transmitted to the CPE and the second has not been transmitted. The content delivery system transmits the first portion to the CPE prior to playback, and the second portion is streamed to the CPE after playback has begun. The playback is under control of the CPE from local storage.

Method and apparatus for content delivery

A system for and method of transmitting audio and visual programming content, by identifying an amount of broadcast transmission capacity available for transmitting the content to one or more users. The content is separated into at least first and second portions based on user demand for the content and/or the identified available broadcast transmission capacity. The first portion of the content is transmitted, to a receiver/STB associated with at least one of the users, using the identified broadcast transmission capacity; and the second portion of the content is transmitted to the receiver using transmission other than broadcast transmission. The content can include nonlinear content. Transmission other than broadcast transmission can include unicast transmission, which can be in response to a user request and/or an initiation by a server. The received nonlinear content can be stored at the receiver for play back at a time different from the time of transmission.

System for content delivery

A content delivery system that works in a broadcast and linear content environment causing real time display of received linear content. The system limits the display of the linear content by determining a time to automatically change the display of the linear content based upon program guide information and other factors, unless a signal is or has been received from a user indicating further interest in the content.

In one embodiment, the present invention comprises transmitting a broadcast burst in a broadcast channel from a base station of a radio communications system. The invention further comprises receiving a request burst from a user terminal, and transmitting a message burst from the base station to the user terminal from which the request was received. A method, device, and machine readable medium to communicate from a base station having a smart antenna system to a user terminal. The method includes providing a downlink channel for transmitting downlink data from the base station to the user terminal, providing an associated channel for the base station to receive an uplink response signal from the user terminal in response to the downlink data. The associated channel is associated, and has a predefined relationship, with the downlink channel. The method further includes providing an uplink data channel, distinct from the associated uplink channel, for the base station to receive uplink data from the user terminal. The method also includes receiving the uplink response signal at the base station, determining a downlink smart antenna processing strategy using the received uplink response signal, sending downlink data from the base station to the user terminal using the determined downlink smart antenna processing strategy, and receiving uplink data from the user terminal on the uplink data channel.

Downlink transmission in a wireless data communication system having a base station with a smart antenna system

An apparatus and method for adaptively producing transmitted signals and processing received signals in a communication system which includes smart antenna array of antenna elements. When processing received signals, the invention modifies an existing processing scheme by incorporating information about a second set of signals for which training or other characteristic information such as a reference is unknown to information about a first set of signals for which characteristic information such as a reference is known, prior to executing the processing scheme. This approach can be used to modify the receive weights which determine the relative weight assigned to the signals received from each of a plurality of antenna elements to take into account the presence of a changing interference environment. This permits an adaptive updating of the receive weights based on the additional information provided by the second set of data, and may be accomplished faster and with less computational resources than required to determine the weights based on applying the entire processing scheme to the second set of data. In addition, assuming a relationship between the transmit and receive environment, the invention can also be used to modify the transmit weights used by the base station.

Apparatus and method for beamforming in a changing-interference environment

A method, communication device, and machine-readable medium. The method includes sending a first poll from a first base station having a smart antenna system to a first user terminal. The first base station receives a first uplink response signal from the first user terminal as a result of the first user terminal successfully receiving the first poll. The first base station also receives at least one other uplink response signals as a result of at least one other remote user terminal successfully receiving a second poll from a second base station. The first base station transmits downlink data to the first user terminal using a downlink smart antenna processing strategy for transmitting to the first user terminal, including mitigating interference to the first and one or more other remote communication devices from which the first base station received a first or other uplink response signal and that may be receiving during transmission of downlink data to the first user terminal. The downlink smart antenna processing strategy is using the first and other received uplink response signals. The first base station uses a first protocol with its associated user terminals and the second base stations uses a second protocol that is coordinated with the first protocol to enable the first base station to receive the first and other uplink response signals from second and one or more other remote communication devices that may be receiving during the step of transmitting downlink data to the first user terminal.

Cooperative polling in a wireless data communication system having smart antenna processing

A method for generating a reference signal from a modulated signal transmitted to a communications station that includes an array of antenna elements and spatial processing means including: separating from the signals received at the antenna elements a copy signal corresponding to the signal transmitted by a particular remote station using an initial spatial weight vector corresponding to the particular remote station; determining from the terminal copy signal a reference signal having substantially the same frequency offset and time alignment as the received antenna signals; and computing a new spatial weight vector by optimizing a cost function, the cost function using the received antenna signals and the reference signal. For demodulation, the method further includes extracting the symbols of the modulated signal.
