A method of configuring an express mesh satellite network includes monitoring a plurality of satellites in a constellation, wherein each of the plurality of satellites includes a plurality of coherent optical modems; determining a topology of the constellation based on (1) ground traffic sources and sinks and (2) locations of any of the plurality of satellites; and causing the any of the plurality of satellites and their corresponding plurality of coherent optical modems to perform one or more of a relay function and a ground link, with corresponding coherent optical modems of the plurality of coherent optical, and based on the topology.

An imaging fiber bundle includes a first end and a second end; and N photonic lanterns, N>1, wherein the N photonic lanterns are disposed between and aligned to the first end and the second end. Each of the N photonic lanterns includes first M multimode cores, at the first end, that extend to S single-mode cores, where M and S are integers, and M<S, and second M multimode cores that, at the second end, that extend from the S single-mode cores.

The system includes one or more input ports with each input port configured to connect to an input fiber bundle. The system additionally includes one or more output ports with each output port configured to connect to an output fiber cable, wherein each of the input fiber bundle and the output fiber cable include a plurality of fiber cores. An electrical crosspoint switch is connected to the one or more input ports and the one or more output ports, wherein the electrical crosspoint switch is configured to connect a given input port to a corresponding output port, including all signals in the input fiber cable to the corresponding output fiber cable.

An optical transceiver includes an electro-optic front end; a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) and an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) connected to the electro-optic front end; and one or more Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) connected to the DAC and the ADC, wherein the one or more FPGAs are connected to one or more of a local memory and a remote storage for loading FPGA bit files, and wherein the one or more FPGAs are loaded with a forward error correction (FEC) encoding app and a FEC decoding app. The FEC encoding app and the FEC decoding app can be selected based on any of an optical application and a standard compliance requirement.

Systems and methods for Doppler frequency shift compensation in free space optical links include a modulator configured to modulate a transmitter laser; a receiver including a Local Oscillator (LO) laser configured to receive a coherent signal; and circuitry configured to tune a frequency of the transmitter laser and the LO laser based on an amount of Doppler frequency shift to be compensated. The systems and methods determine an amount of Doppler shift between a first and second satellite and tune the frequency of the transmitter and LO laser based on the determined amount of Doppler frequency shift.

System and method for Doppler frequency shift compensation in free space optical links

A satellite includes a plurality of transceivers, each configured to selectively connect to one of another transceiver in another satellite and a ground station; and configurable pass-through between the plurality of transceivers that is configured based on a location of the satellite in a constellation. The configurable pass-through can provide data signal pass-through without one or more of full decoding, regeneration, and error correction, thereby saving power.

A hollow core fiber (HCF) link is characterized by structural properties selected to support and sustain light propagation in a fundamental mode and in at least one higher-order mode. Connected to a proximal end of the HCF link, there is a mode coupler configured to couple a data signal into the fundamental mode and to couple an obfuscating signal into the at least one higher-order mode for simultaneous propagation of the data signal and the obfuscating signal on the HCF link, where the obfuscating signal substantially overlaps the data signal in spectral content. At a distal end of the HCF link, there is a mode splitter configured to split a first optical signal detected in the fundamental mode from a second optical signal detected in the at least one higher-order mode.

An express mesh satellite network includes a plurality of satellites arranged in a constellation, each including a plurality of coherent optical modems, wherein the plurality of satellites are configured in a topology based on traffic sources and sinks on the ground where the topology includes express links where satellites are directly connected in space by the coherent optical modems based on the traffic sources and sinks. The plurality of satellites are configured to become a node in the topology when in an associated affinity area having a ground link or requiring a relay function.

A data center fabric includes a plurality of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), each FPGA interconnected by a plurality of links with other FPGAs, a plurality of servers in a data center, and physical network functions associated with the data center, wherein the plurality of FPGAs form a virtual fabric for switching between the FPGAs, the plurality of servers, and the physical network functions, and wherein the virtual fabric is arranged in a compound graph and a flat network with each FPGA being a node and a diameter of the compound graph and the flat network is indicative of a maximum number of hops for a packet through the virtual fabric.

Systems and methods for creating network topology plans are provided. A method, according to one implementation, includes receiving a first constraint (number of nodes) to be set in a graph (under construction). The graph, when complete, is configured to include nodes and interconnections so as to enable each node to reach any other node via one or more interconnections. The method also includes receiving a second constraint (number of degrees) to be set with respect to each node and which defines the maximum number of interconnections that can be connected to each node. Upon determining that the graph is developed to an extent where each node is connected to at least one interconnection and every node is reachable by any other node, the method further includes performing functions to improve metrics related to a hop count that represents a number of interconnections needed for one node to reach another.

Creating an optimal node interconnect topology given certain constraints

Systems, methods, and computer-readable media are provided for controlling the distribution of data packets to intermediate buffers, such as Virtual Output Queues (VOQs) of a group of nodes. A method, according to one implementation, includes a step of detecting traffic congestion metrics associated with an egress port of a destination node grouped in a set of related nodes in a network. Each of the related nodes includes a dedicated buffer device. Based on the detected traffic congestion metrics, the method further includes the step of distributing data packets, which are intended for transmission to the egress port of the destination node, intermediately to the dedicated buffer device of one or more of the related nodes.

Controlling distributed buffers in a network to manage data packets

Systems and methods include, for operation on an optical fiber in an optical network with the optical fiber having extended optical spectrum that include a plurality of bands including at least the C-band and one or more additional bands, segmenting the plurality of bands by distance based on different transmission specifications for the plurality of bands based on fiber types and amplifiers used for corresponding bands; and placing one or more channels on the optical fiber in a corresponding band of the plurality of bands based on a distance between nodes associated with each of the one or more channels. The segmenting is based on a metric that is a function of fiber type of the optical fiber and amplifier performance for amplifiers used in the plurality of bands.
