For structuring a bitstream for binary multimedia descriptions, binary identifiers (BIDs) are positioned on at least one regular positioning grid. Parsing is performed by checking these binary identifiers (BIDs) on the positions defined by the positioning grid.

Method for structuring a bitstream for binary multimedia descriptions and a method for parsing this bitstream

For the binary representation of a description corresponding to an extended description scheme, the same principles as in the MPEG-7 binary format could in principle be used, however, the resulting binary format is different from the binary format of the original MPEG-7 description scheme, even for the identical parts of both description schemes. Means and method are provided for user or application specific extension of the binary format, where the binary format of that part of the description schemes, which is common to both the original MPEG-7 description scheme and the extended description scheme, is preserved.

An entertainment device has a control element with which a user may have equivalent data searched for and then played back by the entertainment device. The data currently being played back are examined for characteristic features, so that the search for equivalent data is then possible using these features. In particular, the actuation of the control element may be used to modify a user profile. In addition, it is possible for the data currently being played back to be stored in the entertainment device when the control element is actuated.

For the description of audio-visual data content in a multimedia environment, a binary representation of description structures is used. A binary identifier (BID) for each specified descriptor (D) and description scheme (DS) as well as a binary description definition language (DDL) represent the components. The advantages of a binary representation are a more compact encoding of description structures and thus savings in storage capacity and/or bandwidth. A faster parsing of the encoded data, especially in the context of dynamically varying descriptions, is thereby achieved.

For upgrading a data stream of multimedia data, which comprises features with textual description, a set of phonetic translation hints is included in the data stream, which specifies the phonetic transcription of parts or words of the textual description. The phonetic transcriptions need not be repeated for each occurrence of a word. This reduces the amount of data necessary for storing or transmitting the description text.

For object-based coding of moving image sequences for video objects, signaling information indicating whether the video object is to be decoded for playback or displayed is always transmitted regardless of the external form of a video object. In contrast with options available in the past, less data need be transmitted.

For the determination of motion vectors, an aliasing-reducing interpolation filtration with a sub-pel precision is used in the motion-compensated prediction of moving image sequences. More adjacent pixels are accessed in this interpolation filtration than in known bilinear interpolation. Asymmetrical filtration or reflection of pixels inside a reference image block is used to assure that maximally, a block of the reference image containing (M&plus;1)&times;(M&plus;1) pixels for interpolation filtration is accessed. However this process requires less memory bandwidth in accessing reference images.
