An electromagnetic (EM) data acquisition method for a geological formation may include operating EM measurement devices to determine phase and amplitude data from the geological formation. The EM measurement devices may include at least one first EM measurement device within a borehole in the geological formation, and at least one second EM measurement device at a surface of the geological formation. The method may further include processing the phase data independent from the amplitude data to generate a geological constituent map of the geological formation, and identifying different geological constituents in the geological constituent map based upon the measured amplitude data.

Phase-based electromagnetic surveys for geological formations

In one embodiment, a method includes receiving one or more datasets including measured vertical electric and magnetic fields excited by one or more radial and azimuthal electric field antennas from a downtool into one or more processors, wherein each of the one or more datasets corresponds to a different position of the one or more radial azimuthal electric field antennas, simultaneously inverting the one or more datasets using the one or more processors, and as a result of the simultaneous inversion, generating by the one or more processors a three-dimensional (3D) image of a portion of the geological formation.

Hybrid electric and magnetic surface to borehole and borehole to surface method

A method for geological formation analysis may include collecting time-lapsed well-based measurement data from a first borehole in a geological formation over a measurement time period, and collecting time-lapsed electromagnetic (EM) cross-well measurement data via a plurality of spaced-apart second boreholes in the geological formation over the measurement time period. The method may further include determining simulated changes to a hydrocarbon resource in the geological formation over the measurement time period based upon a geological model using a processor, and using the processor to determine if the simulated changes are within an error threshold of the time-lapsed well-based measurement data and the time-lapsed cross-well EM measurement data. If the simulated changes are not within the error threshold, then the geological model may be updated.

Geological model analysis incorporating cross-well electromagnetic measurements

An electromagnetic data acquisition system and an associated method for measuring subsurface structures with electromagnetic fields is employed for removing near surface effects from borehole to surface electromagnetic data. Preferably, the system is used to obtain information about deep, target structures located deep below the Earth, especially in oil and gas fields, while mitigating the effect of near surface geological shallow structures on collected electromagnetic (EM) data by using a series of electromagnetic measurements and data treatments that preferentially illuminate near surface geologic shallow structures so that the shallow structures may be recovered separately from deep structures of interest.

Electromagnetic data acquisition system for removing near surface effects from borehole to surface electromagnetic data

A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system that uses a feedback induction coil to detect NMR signals generated within a substance is described herein. In one embodiment, the NMR system uses the Earth's magnetic field in conjunction with a transmitter coil that applies NMR sequences to a formation. The NMR sequences generate a weak NMR signal within the formation due to the weakness of the Earth's magnetic field. This weak NMR signal is detected using the feedback induction coil.

An electromagnetic geophysical survey is performed by transmitting current from a first source into earth, the first source being located in a borehole. An electromagnetic field generated by the current transmitted from the first source is measured to create subsurface data. In addition, a background model is constructed and a leakage current distribution is calculated. A resistivity distribution of the earth is calculated using the subsurface data, the background model and the leakage current distribution, with the leakage current distribution being used as a source current distribution.

Workflow to use borehole completion as antenna for geophysical applications

Systems, methods, and apparatuses to generate a crosswell data set are described. In certain aspects, a method includes producing a first electromagnetic field at the earth's surface with a transmitter at a first location, detecting in a first borehole a first field signal induced by the first electromagnetic field, detecting in a second borehole a second field signal induced by the first electromagnetic field, and generating a crosswell data set from the first field signal and the second field signal. A formation model may be created from the crosswell data set.

Methods and systems are provided to determine a property of an earth formation, comprising a mobile transmitter disposed at a predetermined elevated height above a surface of the earth formation, and one or more receivers moveably disposed in a wellbore penetrating the earth formation. Electromagnetic energy is transmitted from the mobile transmitter into the formation from a plurality of locations; and at the one or more receivers a signal is measured. Using the signal received by the one or more receivers, a property of the formation, such as resistivity, can be determined and mapped.

A method of measuring a parameter characteristic of a rock formation is provided, the method including the steps of obtaining crosswell electromagnetic signals between two wells and using an inversion of said signals to investigate or delineate the presence of a resistivity anomaly, such as brine in a low resistivity background, wherein the resistivity anomaly is assumed to be distributed as one or more bodies characterized by a limited number of geometrical parameters and the inversion is used to determine said geometrical parameters. The method can also be applied to determine the trajectory of an in-fill well to be drilled.

Deep-reading electromagnetic data acquisition method

A technique that is usable with a well includes providing a model so predict measurements that are received by receivers due to transmissions by sources based on estimated positions of the receivers relative to the sources. The estimated positions each have at least two dimensions. At least some of the receivers and the sources are located in the well. On a computer, the estimated positions are automatically refined based on a comparison of the predicted measurements and actual measurements that are obtained by the receivers.

Method and apparatus to automatically recover well geometry from low frequency electromagnetic signal measurements

A wireline tool string used in a wellbore to determine formation properties is disclosed which comprises one or more transmitter tools disposed within the tool string, each transmitter tool having three linearly independent coils; a receiver tool disposed within the tool string, wherein the receiver tool has three linearly independent coils; and a tool string component disposed between the one or mole transmitter tools and the receiver tool; wherein the one or more transmitter tools are selectably spatially separated from the receiver tool along the tool string to provide a desired depth of investigation and measurements made using the one or more transmitter tools and receiver tool are used to determine formation properties.
