Sensors and methods for determining the state of charge of a battery are described. The state of charge is determined in some instances by applying a current perturbation having a frequency to the battery terminals, monitoring the response signal, and determining the phase of the response signal. The phase may be correlated to the state of charge of the battery, so that once the phase is determined, a determination of the state of charge of the battery may be made. In some situations, the state of charge may be used to determine the operating condition of a load connected to the battery. In some embodiments, the state of charge may be used to determine whether the battery is defective.

Tracking state of charge of a non-rechargeable battery using impedance spectroscopy

A wireless communication system includes a network manager configured to wirelessly communicate with a plurality of wireless nodes of a wireless network. The network manager and at least one wireless node include a transceiver connected to transmit and receive wireless communication via an antenna. The network manager and/or the wireless node include a cognitive engine configured to receive information regarding an environment of the wireless network as input and, in response, generate configuration data as output. Subsequent communication on the wireless network is updated using the configuration data.

Smart scheduling of TSCH networks to avoid self-interference

A wireless communication system includes at least one transmitter and at least one receiver. The transmitter is configured to establish wireless link parameters and transmit a data communication using the wireless link parameters. The receiver is configured to receive the data communication, automatically identify one or more of the wireless link parameters using the data, and extract a payload using the identified wireless link parameters. Prior to receiving the data communication, the receiver requires limited information concerning the wireless link parameters established by the transmitter. The wireless link parameters can include selectable aspects such as one or more of a transmission channel, a transmission data rate, a modulation format, a transmission power, a packet format, and a channel coding scheme.

Adaptive detection of wireless link parameters

Aspects of this disclosure relate to detecting a header of a packet. A receive signal path can provide a receive signal that includes packets and a guard preamble between successive packets of the packets. A receiver control circuit can trigger a timer that sets a time for detecting a header of a packet in response to detecting an end of a preamble of the packet.

Multi-packet protocol header detection

An improved receiver for use in a data pocket communications is provide, where the process of configuring the gain of the receiver and identifying a preamble in the data packet are made more robust. The improved receiver does not need to rely on the received power level exceeding a trigger threshold to initiate the gain control. Instead the gain control runs while the receiver is waiting for a data packet. The frequency correction process can run concurrently with the gain control process.

Method of operating a receiver to process a preamble of a data packet, and to a receiver operating in accordance with the method

Aspects of this disclosure relate to transmitting and/or receiving a frequency-shift keying signal including a packet that includes a preamble and a payload. The preamble has a first modulation index that has a smaller magnitude than a second modulation index of the payload. This can enhance frequency correction in a receive device that receives the packet.

Modulation index adjustment

In a communication receiver circuit, an amplifier circuit can include an adjustable gain. A signal corresponding to a portion of a transmitted frame can be received, and a gain of the receiver circuit can be adjusted such as automatically, and such adjustment can be referred to as automatic gain control (AGC). An offset correction can be performed to adjust for an error in a received representation of a transmitted carrier, and such offset correction can be referred to as carrier frequency offset (CFO) correction. A portion of the received signal can be dynamically allocated between AGC and CFO correction, such as allocating a longer duration to CFO correction when AGC results in a relatively higher receiver gain, and allocating a shorter duration to CFO correction when AGC results in a relatively lower receiver gain.

Automatic gain control (AGC) assisted carrier offset correction

Power amplifier circuits can behave in a non-linear manner particularly when operated to produce output signal swings approaching an amplifier saturation region. A pre-distortion signal can be applied to a signal to be transmitted to compensate for such power amplifier non-linearity. In applications where two or more transmitter power amplifiers are used, a beam-former can be configured to modify a digitally pre-distorted transmission signal by applying respective beam-forming weighting factors to the digitally pre-distorted transmission signal to provide input transmission signals for respective ones of the power amplifier circuits. The pre-distortion signal can be established at least in part using one or more of a sensed or estimated representation of a transmitted beam formed by spatially aggregating transmitted outputs from the two or more power amplifier circuits. In this manner, power amplifier efficiency can be enhanced without entirely separate pre-distortion compensation for each of the power amplifier circuits.

Spatial digital pre-distortion

A communication unit comprises a plurality of antenna element feeds () for coupling to a plurality of antenna elements of an antenna array, where each antenna element feed comprises at least one coupler; and a plurality of transmitters operably coupled to the plurality of antenna element feeds. At least one transmitter of the plurality of transmitters comprises: an input for receiving a first signal and at least one second signal; beamformer logic arranged to apply independent beamform weights (RefBF1, RefBF2) on the first signal and the at least one second signal of the transmitter respectively, wherein each of the independent beamform weights is allocated on a per sector basis; and a signal combiner arranged to combine the first signal and the second signal to produce a combined signal, such as that the combined signal supports a plurality of sectored beams.

Aspects of this disclosure relate to active antenna calibration. In some embodiments, a local oscillator signal can be injected into the receive path for misalignment measurement and calibration of the receive path, a transmit signal from a transmit path can be coupled to a receive path, and the transmit path can be calibrated relative to the receive path.

Active antenna calibration

A method for calibrating an antenna array coupled to a plurality of transmitters via a plurality of couplers and a plurality of antenna element feeds is described. The method comprises, at a communication unit: selecting and coupling at least one coupler to a calibration receiver in a feedback path in the communication unit; scaling at least one first signal by at least one first beamform weight; applying the scaled at least one first signal to a first transmitter of the plurality of transmitters and routing the scaled at least one first signal via the selected at least one coupler to the calibration receiver; generating a reference signal by selecting and scaling the at least one first signal by at least one second beamform weight substantially equal to the at least one first beamform weight; comparing the at least one first signal scaled with the at least one first beamform weight with the at least one first signal reference signal scaled by the at least one second beamform weight to determine at least one first parameter result; storing the at least one first parameter result of the comparison associated with the first transmitter; repeating for subsequent transmitters the steps of selecting and coupling a further coupler, scaling, applying at least one further signal to a further transmitter of the plurality of transmitters, generating a further reference signal, comparing and storing at least one further parameter result until the plurality of couplers have been selected; and determining at least one calibration correction coefficient from a plurality of parameter results for applying to at least one second signal input to at least one transmitter of the plurality of transmitters coupled to the antenna array to substantially equalize a transfer function of a plurality of transmit paths to antenna element feeds for the at least one second signal having beamform weights applied thereto.

Communication unit and method of antenna array calibration

A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) calibration device () for calibrating a phase relationship between at least two signals present on at least two radio frequency (RF) paths coupling a wireless communication unit and the MIMO calibration device () is described. The MIMO calibration device () is operably coupleable via at least two RF paths between a wireless communication unit and an antenna arrangement (). The calibration device () comprises a processing module () configured to: process a coupled amount of at least one first signal from a first path operably coupleable to a first polarization of the antenna arrangement () to determine at least one pilot signal from said at least one first signal; process a coupled amount of at least one second signal from a second path operably coupleable to at least one second polarization feed of antenna arrangement (), different to the first polarization, to determine the at least one pilot signal from said at least one second signal; and determine a first phase relationship of the same pilot signal between the at least two RF paths.

MIMO antenna calibration device, integrated circuit and method for compensating phase mismatch

A semiconductor device comprising interface logic for transmitting data bursts across an interface. The interface logic is arranged to transmit bursts of data across the interface such that the start of a burst of data is substantially aligned with a symbol interval (SI) boundary. The interface logic is further arranged to apply an offset to the SI boundary at the start of the burst of data.

Method and apparatus for transmitting data

A method for calibrating () an antenna array comprises a plurality of antenna elements coupled to a plurality of respective receive paths in a wireless communication system. The method comprises, in receive mode, applying a test signal to an individual single receive path () of the plurality of receive paths; and feeding back the test signal via a switched coupler network. The method further comprises running a receive calibration measurement routine to determine at least one measurement value used to calibrate the individual signal receive path and waiting for at least one converged measurement value; and extracting () the converged measurement value for at least one individual receive path.
