Systems and methods are provided for pre-charging the DC bus on a motor drive. Pre-charging techniques involve pre-charge circuitry including a manual switch, an automatic switch, and pre-charge control circuitry to switch the automatic switch between pre-charge and pre-charge bypass modes in response to an initialized pre-charge operation, input voltage sags, and so forth. In some embodiments, the pre-charge operation may be initialized by switching the manual switch closed. In some embodiments, the pre-charge operation may also be initialized by a detected voltage sag on the DC bus. The pre-charge circuitry may also be configured to disconnect to isolate a motor drive from the common DC bus under certain fault conditions.

An electrical insulation configuration for an electrical device having a power circuit includes a first insulation device to provide a level of basic insulation between the power circuit and a user, and an additive insulation device in series with the first insulation device, the additive insulation device to increase the level of basic insulation to a level of double insulation or reinforced insulation between the power circuit and the user.

An improved cooling mechanism for a power electronics device is provided. More specifically, a cooling mechanism is provided that includes an air passageway configured to allow cooling air to bypass a portion of a heatsink adjacent to the rectifier circuitry and direct cooling air into an area of the heatsink that is nearer to the inverter circuitry. Another embodiment employs an air passageway with an air directing structure configured to provide an air flow that impinges on a lateral surface of the heatsink. In another embodiment, the air directing structure is chosen to provide a turbulent air flow in the heat dissipating structure within the vicinity of the inverter circuitry.

AC pre-charging techniques are provided for pre-charging the DC bus on a motor drive. An apparatus and method for mounting additional components, such as capacitors, to a DC bus of a motor drive. In one aspect, a motor drive includes an enclosure defining an interior, an input for receiving input electrical power from a power source, an output for providing output electrical power to a load, an intermediate DC circuit including a DC bus located in the interior of the enclosure, and a modular capacitor bus electrically coupled with the intermediate DC circuit, the modular capacitor bus including at least one capacitor mounted thereto. The modular capacitor bus is mountable as a unit to the DC bus.
