A method for compressing 2D images includes determining a depth map for each of a plurality of sequential 2D images of a 3D volumetric image, determining coordinate transformations the 2D images based on the depth maps and a geometric relationship between the 3D volumetric image and each of the 2D image, performing a lifting-based view compensated wavelet transform on the 2D images using the coordinate transformations to generate a plurality of wavelet coefficients and compressing the wavelet coefficients and depth maps to generate a compressed representation of the 2D images.

Lifting-based view compensated compression and remote visualization of volume rendered images

A method for remotely visualizing an image on a client includes the steps of rendering a 2D image from image data on a server, applying a 2D wavelet transform to the 2D image on the server to generate a plurality of sub-bands, identifying code blocks of the sub-bands that correspond to a region of interest in the 2D image on the server, compressing a number of bit planes of each code block using one of a plurality of coding techniques on the server based on the number of bit planes to generate compressed codes, sending the compressed codes from the server to the client, and visualizing a new 2D image on the client using the received compressed codes.

Methods and systems for remotely visualizing images

Scalable image compression is exploited to facilitate the creative process in the post-production of motion pictures. Specifically, digital intermediate (DI) processing of motion pictures is enabled by dynamically rendering proxies 126 (steps) in response to client requests (steps). A DI application is designed to enhance the efficiency of post-processing and the quality of the work product of the editors, colorists and other creative people. The DI application also provides a method for efficiently formatting the product for film, digital cinema, DVD and other video applications.

Digital intermediate (DI) processing and distribution with scalable compression in the post-production of motion pictures

A method of rate-control for a sequence of scalably coded images having transform coefficients partitioned into coding units coded in a plurality of quality increments having respective significance values. The method defines subsets each having one or more coding units, at least one image contributing at least one coding unit to two or more subsets. A list of requirements (LOR) is set having a least one entry associated with each subset. The significance values are used to select quality increments to construct an admissible codestream that satisfies the LOR on the subsets. The quality increments may be selected to achieve high quality for different subsets subject to size requirements in the LOR. For certain requirements, the codestream will also exhibit approximately constant reconstructed image quality. The quality increments may also be selected to achieve small compressed sizes for different subsets subject to quality requirements in the LOR.

Rate control of scalably coded images

The present invention provides a method for decoding corrupt codestreams for encoded digital imagery and video and, in particular, JPEG2000 codestreams with improved error resilience properties. The decoding techniques apply to a class of coding algorithms in which the data from underlying images are partitioned, typically to allow decoding of different spatial sections of the image, and the rules governing the dependencies within and perhaps between partitioned sets are known. Corrupt codestreams are decoded with improved image quality by observing the partitions imposed by the underlying algorithm (), detecting an error in a partition set (), analyzing the dependencies within and perhaps between the partitions (), determining what sections of encoded data that follow the error in the partition set can be salvaged (), and decoding those sections (). Even though there might be errors in a particular partition, portions of that partition might still be completely or partially decodable, depending on certain modes or 'switches' used during the creation of the codestream.

Methods for decoding corrupt JPEG2000 codestreams

A system and method for prioritized transmission of scalable compressed data are provided, the system including a database server for receiving an interactive prioritization request from a client and prioritizing transmission of the compressed data relative to a bin optimization in response to the interactive prioritization request; and the method including receiving an interactive prioritization request from a client, prioritizing transmission of the compressed data relative to the bin optimization in response to the interactive prioritization request and transmitting the prioritized compressed data to the client.

Prioritized image visualization from scalable compressed data

A system and method for data compression and visualization includes a system having a compression unit for compressing an input image of voxels in accordance with a weighted visualization importance, and a visualization unit in signal communication with the compression unit for visualizing the voxels in an order corresponding to the weighted visualization importance; and a corresponding method for defining a weighting function responsive to a visualization importance parameter for voxels, deriving an order of transmission for the voxels in correspondence with the weighting function, compressing the voxels with a look-up table indicative of the order of transmission, transmitting the compressed voxels in order of decreasing weighted visualization importance, and where the method is optionally for receiving the compressed voxels in order of decreasing weighted visualization importance, decompressing the voxels with the look-up table indicative of the order of transmission, and visualizing a voxel in the order in which it was received.
