The apparatus comprises a first coil comprising a first conductor wound in a first layer at an outer side of the first coil and wound in a first plurality of stacked layers on an inner side of the first coil. At least one layer of the first plurality of stacked layers on the inner side of the first coil is recessed into the ferrite structure. The apparatus comprises a second coil comprising a second conductor wound in a second layer at an outer side of the second coil and wound in a second plurality of stacked layers on an inner side of the second coil. At least one layer of the second plurality of stacked layers on the inner side of the second coil recessed into the ferrite structure.

An apparatus for wirelessly transferring charging power is provided. The apparatus comprises a first coil, as second coil, a ferrite structure positioned on one side of the first coil and the second coil. The ferrite structure includes a first angled surface at an outer side of the first coil and a second angled surface at an outer side of the second coil. The ferrite structure further includes a substantially flat surface at an inner side of the first coil and an inner side of the second coil. The first angled surface and the second angled surface are at an angle to the flat surface.

Systems and methods for a twisted rectangular litz wire for generating or receiving wireless electrical power. The rectangular litz wire may be arranged as a DD coil having first and second co-planar loops. The loops may have a shared single-stacked inner portion and double-stacked outer portions. The litz wire may be twisted between the inner and outer portions, such that a width of the coils at the outer portions is defined by a first longer side of the wires, and a width of the coils at the inner portion is defined by a second shorter side of the wires. This arrangement may reduce a size of the DD coil may reducing a width of the shared inner portion.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for detecting a presence of an object. In one aspect an apparatus for detecting a presence of an object is provided. The apparatus includes a sense coil formed from a conductor having a predetermined shape configured to attenuate currents induced in the conductor by an external time-varying magnetic field. The sense coil has an electrical characteristic that varies as a function of the presence of the object. The apparatus comprises a detection circuit coupled to the sense coil and configured to detect the presence of the object in response to detecting a difference between a measured value of the electrical characteristic and a reference value for the electrical characteristic. The reference value for the electrical characteristic is substantially the same as the measured value of the electrical characteristic in the absence of the object over at least a portion of the sense coil.

One implementation may include an apparatus for wireless power transfer. The apparatus comprises a ferromagnetic layer comprising at least one portion having a reduced thickness. The apparatus further comprises a first coil having at least one portion countersunk into the at least one portion of the ferromagnetic layer having the reduced thickness. The apparatus further comprises a second coil overlapping the at least one countersunk portion of the first coil. The at least one portion having the reduced thickness comprises a recess in the ferromagnetic layer. The ferromagnetic layer comprises a first plurality of ferromagnetic tiles having a first thickness and the at least one portion having the reduced thickness comprises a second plurality of ferromagnetic tiles having the reduced thickness.

In one aspect, a magnetic flux device is provided which includes at least a first electrically conductive coil and a second electrically conductive coil that is substantially coplanar with the first coil. The device includes a magnetically permeable material having a substantially planar surface. The first coil and the second coil are substantially parallel to the substantially planar surface. The area of the material extends beyond the area of the first coil and beyond the area of the second coil. The area of the coil can substantially surround the area of the first coil and the area of the second coil.

In an aspect of the invention, an apparatus for wirelessly receiving power is provided. The apparatus comprises a receiver circuit comprising a receiver coil configured to receive wireless power from a wireless power transmitter via a magnetic field sufficient to charge or power a load of the apparatus. The receiver circuit further comprises a ferrite material having a first side coupled to the receiver coil. One innovation includes a system for reducing magnetic flux of a wireless charging field in a wireless power charging system. The system comprises a wireless power transmitter configured to generate the wireless charging field, the field comprising the magnetic flux and a collector comprising a ferromagnetic material and configured to reduce the magnetic flux. The collector is positioned between a first distance and a second distance at a third distance from the transmitter. An apparatus for wirelessly transferring power comprises a first coil having a first winding path and a second winding path. The apparatus comprises a holder configured to hold the first coil and the second coil in a predetermined winding pattern. Each of the first and second winding paths comprise a plurality of successive winding groups. In each of the plurality of successive winding groups, at least a portion of each winding of consecutive windings is disposed on top of an immediately previous winding on the holder for a predetermined number of windings. Each of the successive winding groups of the first winding path is disposed along an outer perimeter of an immediately previous winding group and each of the successive winding groups of the second winding path is disposed along an inner perimeter of an immediately previous winding group.

A method and apparatus for reducing leakage magnetic flux in wireless vehicle charging systems are disclosed. A wireless power receiver may be configured to couple to a wireless field generated by a wireless power transmitter. A portion of the wireless field may comprise the leakage magnetic flux. A leakage collector comprising a ferromagnetic material may be positioned at a distance from the wireless power receiver within the wireless field and may be configured to absorb or redirect at least a portion of the leakage magnetic flux away from an outer edge of an electric vehicle.

This disclosure provides systems, methods and apparatus for avoiding magnetic power loss while providing alternating current through a ferromagnetic material. In one aspect, the ferromagnetic material includes at least one orifice. At least one electrical conduit extends through the at least one orifice from a first region on a first side of the ferromagnetic material to a second region on a second side of the ferromagnetic material, the second side opposite to the first side. The at least one electrical conduit is configured to have at least one alternating current flowing along the at least one electrical conduit between the first region and the second region. The ferromagnetic material and the at least one electrical conduit are configured to reduce power loss caused by a circumferential magnetic flux generated within the ferromagnetic material by the at least one alternating current.

The wireless power receiver apparatus can include a housing that includes a first volume configured to house the coil. The housing can also include a second volume configured to house electronic components. The second volume can be bound by a horizontal shielding member along a first portion of the second volume. The horizontal shielding member can define a horizontal shielding member plane substantially parallel to a plane defined by the coil. The second volume can also be bounded by a vertical shielding member along a second portion of the second volume. The vertical shielding member can define a vertical shielding member plane substantially orthogonal to the plane defined by the coil.

Integration of electronic components in inductive power transfer systems

Apparatus, system, and method for adaptive charging compliance control are disclosed. A charging station wirelessly charges a vehicle in compliance with emissions regulations. A controller in the charging station obtains information regarding the characteristics of an incoming vehicle and accesses a maximum regulation-compliant power level database based on the vehicle information obtained and determines conditions of the vehicle parked at the charging station. The controller determines and delivers the maximum power level to wirelessly charge the vehicle while maintaining the level of field emissions no greater than the regulatory limit.
