A system and method for mitigating the impact of ingested lithium coin cell batteries is described. A coating is provided on an exterior facing of the cell, preferably within the crimp region, which releases acid and/or other additives. These acids and/or additives are selected to neutralize hydroxide that may evolve from hydrolysis of saliva that occurs if/when the coin cell becomes lodged in the digestive tract.

Coatings for mitigation of coin cell ingestion

A lithium/iron disulfide electrochemical battery cell with a high discharge capacity. The cell has a lithium negative electrode, an iron disulfide positive electrode and a nonaqueous electrolyte. The iron disulfide of the positive electrode has a controlled average particle size range which allows the electrochemical cells to exhibit desired properties in both low and high rate applications. In various embodiments, the iron disulfide particles are wet milled, preferably utilizing a media mill or milled utilizing a non-mechanical mill such as a jet mill, which reduces the iron disulfide particles to a desired average particle size range for incorporation into the positive electrode.

High discharge capacity lithium battery

A cathode, electrochemical cell and process for making either is disclosed. The cathode includes iron disulfide which exhibits multiple peaks representing distinct maxima of mean diameters for the volume-based particle size distribution. All of the maxima are less than 20 microns. A combination of natural pyrite ore and synthetic iron disulfide may be mixed to achieve the desired distribution, or a combination of natural pyrite ores may be processed in different manners to achieve the desired characteristics.

Particle size distribution variations in iron disulfide cathodes

The invention relates to primary electrochemical cells having a jellyroll electrode assembly that includes a lithium-based negative electrode, a positive electrode with a coating comprising iron disulfide deposited on a current collector and a polymeric separator. More particularly, the invention relates to a cell designs and cathode formulations incorporating specific types of conductors to improve cell performance.

Lithium-iron disulfide cathode formulation having pyrite content and low conductive additives

Electrochemical battery cells, and more particularly, to cells comprising a lithium negative electrode and an iron disulfide positive electrode. Before use in the cell, the iron disulfide has an inherent pH, or a mixture of iron disulfide and an pH raising additive compound have a calculated pH, of at least a predetermined minimum pH value. In a preferred embodiment, the pH raising additive compound comprises a Group IIA element of the Periodic Table of the Elements, or an acid scavenger or pH control agent such as an organic amine, cycloaliphatic epoxy, amino alcohol or overbased calcium sulfonate. In one embodiment, the iron disulfide particles utilized in the cell have a specific reduced average particle size range. Methods for preparing cathodes and electrochemical battery cells comprising such cathodes including (a) iron disulfide or (b) a mixture of iron disulfide and the pH raising additive compound, having (a) an inherent pH or (b) a calculated pH greater than or equal to a predetermined minimum value are disclosed.

Process of making high purity, synthetic FeS, and an electrochemical battery employing such synthetic FeSin the positive electrode. Synthetic FeSmay be prepared by a sulfidation process comprising reacting ferric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, and elemental sulfur at a temperature above the melting point of element sulfur. Synthetic FeSmay also be produced by a milling process that comprises (i) milling iron powder and sulfur powder in the presence of a milling media and a processing agent to provide a homogenous powder mixture, and (ii) treating the powder mixture to form FeS. In the milling process, the powder mixture may be treated to form FeSby heating the powder mixture or subjecting the powder mixture to a subsequent milling operation.
