A process for preparing alkyl polyglycosides by reacting a fatty alcohol with a saccharide in a glycosidation reaction under acidic condition wherein a water-containing emulsion is drawn off from the reaction includes an improvement wherein the emulsion is demulsified by raising the pH of the water-containing emulsion, preferably to a level above 7, whereupon the demulsified water-containing emulsion is allowed to settle into at least a predominantly fatty alcohol containing first layer and a predominantly water-containing second layer. The fatty alcohol-containing layer can be recycled back to the glycosidation reaction. The pH of the water-containing emulsion can be raised by the addition thereto of caustic, such as sodium hydroxide.

Method for making an alkyl glycoside

A method for reducing the COD of water containing an emulsion of organic material in water. The emulsion contains insoluble organic material and a surfactant. The COD is reduced by mixing a cationic polymer flocculent with the water and maintaining the temperature at from 37.degree. C. to 95.degree. C. for a sufficient length of time for an organic phase and water with reduced COD to form.

Method for reducing chemical oxygen demand of water containing organic

A continuous method of bleaching an alkylpolyglycoside, substantially free of alcohol, with peroxy compounds, preferably hydrogen peroxide, which is highly efficient to provide an unexpected high degree of color reduction from a dark brown to a light, white product, from an extinction coefficient color respectively of about 10 to about 15 to about 0.025 to about 0.15. The bleaching is carried out at controlled pH and temperature, under pressure preferably in the presence of Mg or MgO.

A process for preparing aliphatic polysaccharides in which a slurry of a hydrous saccharide source in a first portion of aliphatic alcohol is introduced into a second portion of the aliphatic alcohol maintained at an elevated temperature and under a reduced pressure to form a mixture of saccharide source and alcohol with a reduced water content, introducing an acid catalyst into the mixture with the reduced water content and reacting the aliphatic alcohol with the saccharide source to form an aliphatic glycoside.

Process for the preparation of glycosides

The invention is a process for reducing the fatty alcohol content of a mixture of fatty alcohol and fatty glycoside product by passing the mixture through a forced circulation evaporation zone to form a mixture of fatty alcohol and fatty glycoside product with a reduced fatty alcohol content and passing the mixture with the reduced fatty alcohol content to a wiped film evaporator to remove additional fatty alcohol.
