A method of utilizing the first valve bounce is used in a diesel engine having a solenoid valve controlled fuel injection system, wherein the solenoid-actuated valve is movable between a fully closed position for injection and a fully open position preventing injection. The method includes: (1) energizing the solenoid for valve movement to the fully closed position for commencing pilot injection; (2) de-energizing the solenoid immediately prior to the valve reaching the fully closed position for pilot injection in order to facilitate movement of the valve toward the fully open position immediately after the valve has reached the fully closed position, thereby preventing subsequent valve bounces; and (3) re-energizing the solenoid immediately prior to the valve reaching the fully open position, whereby to facilitate movement of the valve toward the fully closed position for main injection immediately after the valve reaches the fully open position, thus preventing subsequent valve bounces and decreasing time lag between pilot and main injection.

Method of utilization of valve bounce in a solenoid valve controlled

A high-pressure electromagnetic fuel injector having a dual-function valve directly controlled by an electric solenoid. Fuel pressure in a control volume chamber is controlled by the dual-function valve, and a separate control valve is controlled as a function of fuel pressure in the control volume chamber. A spray tip valve is, in turn, controlled as a function of the pressure of fuel controlled by the control valve to inject fuel through a spray tip orifice. The dual-function valve spills fuel during and after the control valve closes, thus reducing the amount of uncontrolled fuel at the end of an injection. The dual-function valve also provides a drain path through which to vent any fuel that leaks past the control valve.

High-pressure electromagnetic fuel injector

A fuel injector including a housing having a fuel passage connectable at one end to a source of fuel for the ingress or egress of fuel at a suitable supply pressure, a fuel supply chamber in flow communication with the fuel passage, a pump cylinder in the housing, an externally actuated plunger reciprocable in the pump cylinder at a predetermined clearance therewith and defining at one end thereof a pump chamber open at one end for the discharge of fuel during a pump stroke and for fuel intake during a suction stroke of said plunger. The plunger includes a piston and a push rod concentrically located within the piston along an axis thereof, and fixed thereto to preclude relative axial movement along such axis. The push rod includes a head portion extending beyond one end of the piston to be engaged by a plunger actuator to cause a pumping stroke under force, and a stem portion in radial clearance with the piston and engaging the piston at the other end of the piston whereby the force of the plunger actuator is transferred by the push rod directly and only to the other end of the piston, thus precluding placing the said one end of the piston under compression and thereby maintaining the predetermined clearance between the plunger and the housing.
