A transmitter includes an array antenna and a plurality of transmitter modules. Each transmitter module includes a phase-lock loop with a slipped-cycle counter for determining the number of cycles of slippage before locking. A source of frequency reference signals is coupled to the phase-lock loop of each module by a path of unknown length. The phase of the reference signals at each module is determined from the number of slipped cycles, and a phase or delay corrector is set to compensate for differences among the modules. The modules amplify the signals to be transmitted and apply the amplified signals to the antenna array by way of paths of controlled length.

Digital beamforming phased array

An open architecture design for a digital nearfield test system for nearfield testing of a phased array antenna allows the ability to use the components of an individual phased array antenna to be tested in conjunction with a nearfield scanner probe system allowing an efficient and cost-saving 'radar testing the radar' scenario.

Nearfield testing architecture

A system for testing a phased array comprising a phase-locked loop circuit responsive to a received output signal of the phased array. The phase-locked loop circuit comprises a phase detector; a filtering element, a variable frequency oscillator and a feedback loop. The system is configured to output at least one of a value indicative of the output of the phase detector and a value indicative of the output of the filtering element for estimating at least one of an imparted phase shift and an imparted frequency modulation by array.

Distributed phased array testing device

A radar system with an array antenna includes various signal paths, including beamformers, extending between an exciter, a receiver, and the array antenna. The signal paths are calibrated by a method that includes frequency modulation of the exciter signals that reach the 'antenna' and additional amplitude modulation of signals just as they enter the receiver. Leakage paths directly from the exciter to the receiver are unmodulated, those extending from the exciter through the beamformer are amplitude modulated, and only those reaching the 'antenna' and returning to the receiver are both amplitude and frequency modulated. The receiver is tuned to receive only the &#x201c;doubly-modulated&#x201d; signals, which tends to reject leakage signals.
