A computer-assisted device includes a first repositionable arm configured to support a first end effector, a second repositionable arm configured to support a second end effector, and a control unit. The control unit configured to monitor an actual motion of at least one structure selected from the group consisting of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector; determine a deviation between the actual motion and a desired motion of the at least one structure; and in response to determining that the deviation is greater than a deviation threshold, select whether to halt motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector or the second repositionable arm and the second end effector based on a mode of operation of the first repositionable arm the first end effector, the second repositionable arm, or a mode of operation of the second end effector.

System and method for rapid halt and recovery of motion deviations in repositionable arms

A system and method of breakaway clutching in a device includes a plurality of links coupled by a plurality of joints, a brake coupled to brake a first joint of the plurality of joints, and a control unit operatively coupled to the brake. The control unit includes one or more processors. The control unit switches the first joint from a first state of the first joint to a second state of the first joint in response to a determination that an external stimulus applied to the plurality of links or the plurality of joints meets at least a first criterion and switches the first joint from the second state to the first state in response to a speed associated with the first joint meeting at least a second criterion. The control unit causes more braking with the first brake in the first state than in the second state.

System and method for breakaway clutching in an articulated arm

A system includes a manually manipulatable component configured to generate signals when movements of the component are detected and a control module. The control module is configured to determine that there is uncontrolled movement of the component by determining that a distance of a movement of the component relative to a previous position of the component is greater than a threshold distance or determining that a first mechanical degree of freedom (DOF) of the component has moved and a second mechanical DOF of the component has not moved, and command the system to switch from an operating mode to a safe mode in response to determining that there is uncontrolled movement of the component. The previous position is associated with when a last definitive movement of the component was detected. The first mechanical DOF is affected by gravity and the second mechanical DOF is not affected by gravity.

Detecting uncontrolled movement

A teleoperational system receives a movement command in response to movement of an input device, in response to determining an instrument is being controlled based on the movement of the input device, maps the movement command to a first movement of the instrument in an instrument frame using a first mapping, and in response to determining a tissue probe is being controlled based on the movement of the input device, maps the movement command to a second movement of the tissue probe in a tissue probe frame using a second mapping. The first mapping maps motion in an input direction in the input frame to an instrument direction in the instrument frame. The second mapping maps motion in the input direction to a tissue probe direction in the tissue probe frame. The instrument direction corresponding with the input direction. The tissue probe direction not corresponding with the input direction.

Systems and methods for controlling a surgical instrument

A system and method of breakaway clutching in a device includes an arm having a first joint and a control unit coupled to the arm. The control unit includes one or more processors. The control unit switches the first joint from a first state of the first joint to a second state of the first joint in response to an external stimulus applied to the arm exceeding a first threshold. Movement of the first joint is more restricted in the first state than in the second state. The control unit further switches the first joint from the second state to the first state in response to a speed associated with the first joint falling below a speed threshold. The first threshold is based on at least one first property of the arm. The speed threshold is based on at least one second property of the arm.

A computer-assisted device includes a first repositionable arm configured to support a first end effector, a second repositionable arm configured to support a second end effector, and a control unit. The control unit configured to monitor an actual motion of at least one structure selected from the group consisting of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, determine a deviation threshold based on at least one parameter selected from the group consisting of a mode of operation of the first end effector and a mode of operation of the computer-assisted device, and in response to determining that the actual motion of the at least one structure deviates from a desired motion of the at least one structure by more than the deviation threshold, halt motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector or halt motion of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector.

A system and method of breakaway clutching in a device includes an arm including a first joint and a control unit coupled to the arm. The control unit includes one or more processors. The control unit switches the first joint from a first state of the first joint to a second state of the first joint in response to an external stimulus applied to the arm exceeding a first threshold, wherein movement of the first joint is more restricted in the first state of the first joint than in the second state of the first joint, switches the first joint from the second state to the first state in response to a speed associated with the first joint falling below a speed threshold, and prevents the switching of the first joint from the first state to the second state when the arm is in a predetermined mode.

A system includes a manually movable input control configured to generate signals when a movement of one or more mechanical degrees of freedom of the input control is detected and a control module. The control module is configured to determine whether a movement of the input control is anticipated to cause an instrument to move outside of a safe range of movement of the instrument and command the system to switch from an operating mode to a safe mode in response to determining that the movement of the input control is anticipated to cause the instrument to move outside of the safe range of movement of the instrument. The instrument is separate from the input control. In the operating mode the instrument moves in response to movement of the input control. In the safe mode the instrument does not move in response to movement of the input control.

A system and method for rapid halt and recovery of motion deviations in a medical device includes a computer-assisted medical device having a first repositionable arm having one or more first repositionable elements, a second repositionable arm having one or more second repositionable elements, and a control unit communicably coupled to the first and second repositionable arms. The control unit is configured to control motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector based on a desired motion, monitor an actual motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, determine whether the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than a predetermined threshold, and halt motion of the first repositionable arm and the first end effector, or of the second repositionable arm and the second end effector, when the actual motion deviates from the desired motion by more than the predetermined threshold.

System and method for rapid halt and recovery of motion deviations in medical device repositionable arms

A teleoperational medical system comprises an input device and a manipulator configured to couple with and move an instrument. The system also comprises a control system including one or more processors. In response to a determination that the instrument is inserted into an instrument workspace in a corresponding direction to a field of view of the workspace, the control system is configured to map movement of the input device to movement of the instrument according to a first mapping. In response to a determination that the instrument is inserted into the instrument workspace in a non-corresponding direction to the field of view, the control system is configured to map movement of the input device to movement of the instrument according to a second mapping. The second mapping includes an inversion of the first mapping for at least one direction of motion of the instrument.

A system and method of breakaway clutching in a device includes an arm including a first joint and a control unit coupled to the arm and including one or more processors. The control unit switches the first joint from a first state of the first joint to a second state of the first joint in response to an external stimulus applied to the arm exceeding a first threshold and switches the first joint from the second state to the first state in response to a speed associated with the first joint falling below a speed threshold. Movement of the first joint is more restricted in the first state of the first joint than in the second state of the first joint. In some embodiments, the external stimulus applied to the arm is a stimulus detected on the first joint or a stimulus detected on a second joint of the arm.

A teleoperated surgical system includes a component such as a master control or a multi-jointed mechanical system that is configured for manual manipulation and a detection module configured to analyze movement of the component and detect uncontrolled movement of the component. Uncontrolled movement may be identified by detecting movement only on joints that gravity can move, but no movement on joints that are not subject to movement caused by gravity. In response to detection of uncontrolled movement of the component, the detection module can cause the system to switch to a safe mode of operation.

A system and method of breakaway clutching in a computer-assisted medical device includes an articulated arm having one or more first joints and a control unit coupled to the articulated arm and having one or more processors. The control unit operates each of the first joints in multiple states. The multiple states include a locked state, wherein movement of respective first joints is restricted, and a float state, wherein movement of the respective first joints is permitted. The control unit further switches one or more second joints selected from the first joints from the locked state to the float state when a stimulus on the second joints exceeds one or more unlock thresholds and switches the second joints from the float state to the locked state when a velocity of each of the second joints is below one or more lock thresholds.

Methods, apparatus, and systems for operating a surgical system. In accordance with a method, a position of a surgical instrument is measured, the surgical instrument being included in a mechanical assembly having a plurality of joints and a first number of degrees of freedom, the position of the surgical instrument being measured for each of a second number of degrees of freedom of the surgical instrument. The method further includes estimating a position of each of the joints, where estimating the position of each joint includes applying the position measurements to at least one kinematic model of the mechanical assembly, the kinematic model having a third number of degrees of freedom greater than the first number of degrees of freedom. The method further includes controlling the mechanical assembly based on the estimated position of the joints.

Phantom degrees of freedom in joint estimation and control

Various devices for providing foot controlled computing device inputs are discussed herein. Some embodiments may include a rolling foot controller including a housing, one or more motion sensors disposed within the housing, and processing circuitry. The housing may include an upper portion configured to interface with one or more feet, and a lower portion configured to facilitate motion of the rolling foot controller when disposed on a ground surface. The processing circuitry may be configured to receive the motion data generated by the one or more motion sensors, and provide the motion data to a computing device, especially with regards to rotation in the pitch, yaw, and roll directions. The upper portion is generally of convex shape, curved about one or more axes, and the lower portion is generally convex as well, curved about two or more axes.
