A water heating system including a tank at least one of an electric heating element and/or a heat pump assembly for heating the water in the tank and a controller operatively coupled to the at least one of an electric resistance heating element and/or a heat pump assembly configured to control operation of the water heating system is disclosed. The controller is configured to gather information comprising at least one of user preferences for the system, specifications for energy related systems of a home in which the water heating system is installed, specifications for how the water heating system is physically configured within the home, environmental parameters for a location in which the water heating system is installed, and is configured to process this information to control the water heater system to operate according to the information.

A headphone that includes a headband and one or two earcups. The earcups are movably coupled to the headband by a joint that is constructed and arranged to allow translation of the earcup relative to the headband along a translational axis, and rotation of the earcup from a neutral position in both directions about the translational axis, where in a first direction the rotation extends for at least about 90 degrees from the neutral position. The joint is further constructed and arranged to accommodate an electrical cable.

An in-ear earphone includes a body shaped to fit in the wearer's ear, a nozzle extending from the body towards the ear canal of the wearer's ear, the nozzle including an acoustic passage to conduct sound waves to the ear canal of the wearer, an ear canal sealing structure extending from the nozzle, and a sensor coupled to the nozzle. The sealing structure includes a thin sheet of material forming a hollow shape surrounding the nozzle and sensor, and the body, nozzle, sealing structure, and sensor are arranged such that when the earphone is located in the wearer's ear, the sensor faces the tragus of the ear, and the sealing structure simultaneously forms an acoustic seal to the entrance to the ear canal and provides optical coupling between the sensor and the tragus with minimal air gaps between the sensor, the sealing structure, and the tragus.

The subject technology can be embodied in a retaining structure which is configured to engage with external structures to hold an earpiece in position. The retaining structure includes a first portion forming a loop and having an upper end and a lower end. The upper end of the first portion is coupled to a top surface of a body of the earpiece and the lower end of the first portion is coupled to a bottom surface of the earpiece. The retaining structure also includes a second portion having an upper end and a lower end, wherein the lower end of the second portion is coupled to the loop formed by the first portion, and the upper end of the second portion extends from the earpiece. The top and bottom surfaces are located on substantially opposite sides of the body in a direction along a plane of the retaining structure.
