The 16 bit program counter of an 8 bit microprocessor within a camera is used to provide a 16 character display on the camera, such that messages with a 16 bit address are accessed. When the message for display is invoked, the address of the message is placed in the program counter, and a software interrupt is caused. Due to the software interrupt, the upper and lower bytes of the address in the program counter are pushed onto the stack, popped off the stack and stored in adjacent memory locations. The address may then be read from the adjacent memory locations, the message displayed and a return from interrupt effected.

16 bit address access using 8 bit registers

A single-line 16 character display is driven using a display driver designed to drive two independent 8 character single-line displays. Conceptually, the 16 character display is treated as the two independent 8 character displays placed side by side. The message for display is placed in a first area of driver memory corresponding to the first 8 character display. A truncated version of the same message for display, with an offset at the beginning equal to the number of characters in the first display line, is stored in a second area of driver memory corresponding to the second 8 character display line. When the message and the truncated version thereof are simultaneously displayed, an observer views a single, coherent 16 character single line display. If the message is greater than 16 characters, the driver scrolls both the message for display and the truncated version thereof, creating a single scrolled message from the point of view of the observer.

Emulation of single line display with multi-line display driver

A camera system includes a user friendly interface to enable a camera user to enter text data to be printed on a photographic film in a simple and convenient manner. The user interface is also used to display text messages to the user indicating certain camera conditions. More specifically, a camera is provided that includes a display unit, a display control interface for manually selecting text data to be displayed on the display unit and a control unit for controlling the operation of the display unit to display the text data selected by the manual user interface. The display unit preferably includes a text data display section and fixed icon display section.
