Technique for Routing digital audio and digital video signals commences by routing a digital video signal, devoid of embedded digital audio, to at least one output, typically by way of a video cross-point switch. At least one digital audio signal undergoes buffering to obtain a prescribed amount of data prior re-timing of the digital audio signal to a prescribed timing format. Following buffering and re-timing, the digital audio signal undergoes routing to at least one output, typically by way of an audio cross-point switch. When routed to outputs associated with each other, the digital audio signal undergoes embedding in the digital video.

Audio/video router

A bidirectional serial port for digital audio data includes a cable connector for coupling the port to a cable, a cable driver having a serial digital audio signal as an input and also having an output, a receiver having an input and an output, and an impedance and level matching network coupled to the output of the cable driver, the input of the receiver, and the cable connector. The port can be selectively configured either as an input port by causing the impedance and level matching network to act as a cable termination or as an output port by allowing the serial digital audio signal to pass through the cable driver and the impedance and level matching network to the cable connector.

A modular frame assembly and modules are provided. The modular frame assembly includes a motherboard, module connectors and an opening in the motherboard for allowing direct connection of first and second modules. The first modules have plugs that extend through the plane of the motherboard, allowing the size of the opening to be minimized. The second modules have a wide external connector portion that allows for high density interconnection on the rear of the frame. Each of the modules may be provided with a plurality of connectors.
