Augmented and/or mixed reality systems for performing various types of arthroplasty are provided, along with methods of performing various types of arthroplasty using such augmented reality systems. More particularly, the augmented and/or mixed reality system and method is used to achieve accurate bone preparation, implant placement and orientation, and biomechanical restoration in orthopaedic arthroplasty procedures. Preparation, implantation, and adjustment of arthroplasty surgical sites, prosthetic components, and tailoring and positioning of installed prosthetic components can be guided using augmented reality overlays, projections, or combined imaging of a surgeon's real-world view.

Augmented/mixed reality system and method for orthopaedic arthroplasty

A methodology integrating multiscale analysis and design optimization to design a novel bone replacement implant made of a functionally graded cellular material that meets fatigue requirements imposed by cyclic loadings. The pore microarchitecture, described by interconnectivity, porosity, pore size as well as pore topology, is optimally designed for tissue regeneration and mechanical strength. A bone implant with a graded cellular microstructure is also provided.

Bone replacement implants with mechanically biocompatible cellular material

A method for manufacturing an implant includes pre-selecting a designed porous microstructure having a lattice composed of cells, including selecting one or more predetermined cell topologies, selecting a predetermined porosity, cell strut thickness and packing factor of the lattice, and selecting an arrangement of the cells within the lattice to have a periodic and/or aperiodic arrangement. Additive manufacturing is used to form the designed porous lattice microstructure in at least a region of at least an external surface of the implant.

Structural porous biomaterial and implant formed of same

An implant comprising a porous microstructure is disclosed which has an external surface, where at least a region of the external surface is formed of the porous microstructure. The microstructure is defined by at least one lattice of cells. Each cell has a predetermined cell topology and a plurality of edges. One or more of the edges of each cell connect to an adjacent cell along a corresponding edge thereof. Collectively, the cells have a periodic or aperiodic arrangement within the at least one lattice.

A synthetic bone graft is described which is adapted to be received within a bone defect and which is structurally load-bearing. The bone graft comprises an entirely synthetic graft body corresponding in shape and size to the bone defect. The graft body is composed of a plurality of superimposed multilayered structures, each of the multilayered structures having a biopolymer layer joined to a biomineral layer to define an interface therebetween. The biomineral layer has a stiffness that is greater than that of the biopolymer layer, and the biopolymer layer has a toughness that is less than that of the biomineral layer.

Multilayered bone graft and method of making same

A bone implant comprises an active agent on at least a portion thereof. The active agent is locally deliverable to bone proximate the implant in at least a two-phased release scheme. A first phase rapidly releases a first quantity of the active agent, and at least a second phase gradually releases a second quantity of the active agent, whereby bone formation stimulated by the active agent is modulated. In one embodiment, a porous implant comprises a porous portion coated with a calcium phosphate compound and which is contacted with a bisphosphonate compound to form a bisphosphonate layer chemically bound to the calcium phosphate at the surface of the porous portion and to form bisphosphonate molecules being non-chemically attached inside the pores of the porous portion. The non-chemically attached bisphosphonate molecules are released in the subject at a rate greater than that of the chemically bound bisphosphonate layer.

Implant improving local bone formation

Bony ingrowth adjacent a surface of a prosthetic device is provided by positioning an emitting surface of an ultrasonic applicator adjacent a skin location corresponding to an interface between bone tissue and an artificial prosthetic device located inside the body. Ultrasound is created and transmitted from the emitting surface into the body at the skin location toward at least a portion of the interface. The ultrasound is modulated to induce shear waves of acoustic energy within the bone adjacent the portion of the interface. The shear waves promote bony ingrowth at the portion of the interface.
