A shunt voltage regulator for a processor is disposed on the processor package. The shunt voltage regulator responds to AC transients. One embodiment includes a DC power converter voltage regulator that is disposed off the processor package, and that is optimized for DC power conversion. Another embodiment includes a method of improving fabrication yield for a packaged processor.

Shunt voltage regulator and method of using

A system and method for automatically adjusting microprocessor activity following thermal stress of a voltage regulator is disclosed. A thermal monitoring circuit determines whether the voltage regulator has exceeded a predetermined temperature. The thermal monitoring circuit may employ a temperature-sensing component such as a thermistor to determine the temperature or may derive the temperature indirectly, based on the average input (or output) current. When the over-temperature condition occurs, a signal activates the PROCHOT#, or similar, pin on a microprocessor, throttling the microprocessor clock. Where the microprocessor includes no internal power-reducing feature, the signal throttles an external clock coupled to the microprocessor. In either case, execution of the microprocessor is slowed down. At all times, the voltage regulator maintains the ability to supply continuous current to the microprocessor.

A method includes locking onto a spread spectrum clock signal to minimize a phase error between an output clock signal and the spread spectrum clock signal. The spread spectrum clock signal has a time-varying frequency that cycles at a modulation frequency. The method includes minimizing a phase angle between spectral components of the output and spread spectrum clock signals near the modulation frequency. In some embodiments, the method may be performed by a phase locked loop.

A power supply for a computer is disclosed. The power supply is capable of providing power in both a DC domain and a high frequency AC domain. A first power consuming component can be coupled to the power supply to receive power in the DC domain, and a second power consuming component can be coupled to the power supply to receive power in the high frequency AC domain.

An improved voltage regulator is disclosed, which includes a pulse width modulator for generating a switching signal at a modulated frequency. A method for use with a computer system includes modulating a first clock signal according to a first frequency-time profile to generate a second spread spectrum clock signal. The first clock signal is modulated according to a second frequency-time profile that is asynchronous to the first frequency-time profile to generate a third spread spectrum clock signal.

A method includes energizing and de-energizing at least one inductor to furnish an output power. An indication of the output power is monitored to detect when a transient occurs in the output power. The energizing and de-energizing are performed at a predetermined frequency when the transient is not detected; and in response to the detection of the transient, the energizing and de-energizing are performed at a frequency that deviates from the predefined frequency to compensate for the transient.

One method of preparing such devices involves etching fracture channels in the electrodes of a plaque containing a PTC conductive polymer element sandwiched between metal foil electrodes, and then snapping the plaque along the fracture channels to form individual devices.

A circuit protection device which comprises first and second laminar electrodes; a laminar PTC conductive polymer resistive element sandwiched between the electrodes; a third laminar conductive member which is secured to the same face of the PTC element as the second electrode but is separated therefrom; and an electrical connector which connects the third conductive member and the first electrode. This permits connection to both electrodes from the same side of the device, so that the device can be connected flat on a printed circuit board, with the first electrode on top, without any need for leads. The connector is preferably a cross-conductor which passes through an aperture in the PTC element, because this makes it possible to carry out the steps for preparing the devices on an assembly which corresponds to a number of individual devices, with division of the assembly as the final step.
