Dialysis is enhanced by using nanoclay sorbents to better absorb body wastes in a flow-through system. The nanoclay sorbents, using montmorillonite, bentonite, and other clays, absorb significantly more ammonium, phosphate, and creatinine, and the like, than conventional sorbents. The montmorillonite, the bentonite, and the other clays may be used in wearable systems, in which a dialysis fluid is circulated through a filter with the nanoclay sorbents. Waste products are absorbed by the montmorillonite, the bentonite, and the other clays and the dialysis fluid is recycled to a patient's peritoneum. Using an ion-exchange capability of the montmorillonite, the bentonite, and the other clays, waste ions in the dialysis fluid are replaced with desirable ions, such as calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate. The nanoclay sorbents are also useful for refreshing a dialysis fluid used in hemodialysis and thus reducing a quantity of the dialysis fluid needed for the hemodialysis.

The present invention provides a flowable material container assembly having a membrane tube disposed coaxially within a port tube. The membrane tube has an outer layer, a core layer, and an inner layer. The outer layer is a blend of a polyolefin and a thermoplastic elastomer. The core layer is a blend of a polyolefin and a thermoplastic elastomer. The inner layer is a blend of a polyolefin, a radio frequency susceptible polymer, and a thermoplastic elastomer.

Port tube and closure composition, structure and assembly for a flowable material container

The present invention provides a multiple layered non-PVC containing tubing structure. The tubing structure has a first and a second layer. The first layer is of a polymer blend of (a) from about 30% to about 50% by weight of the first layer a first polyolefin selected from the group consisting of a first propylene containing polymer, (b) from about 0 to about 50% by weight of the first layer a second polyolefin of an &#x3b1;-olefin containing polymer; (c) from about 0% to about 40% by weight of the first layer a radio frequency susceptible polymer and (d) from about 5% to about 40% of a first thermoplastic elastomer. The second layer is attached to the first layer and includes a non-PVC containing material.

Assembly for a flowable material container

The present invention provides a polymer blend having: a first component of a propylene containing polymer in an amount by weight of the blend from about 25% to about 35%; a second component selected from the group consisting of polyesters, polyester elastomers, and polyurethanes, the second component present in an amount by weight of the blend of from about 35% to about 45%; and a third component of an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer in an amount by weight of the blend from about 25% to about 35%.

The present invention provides a flowable materials container. The container has a first sidewall and a second sidewall sealed together along a peripheral seam to define a fluid chamber. At least one sidewall is a film having at least one layer of blend of a first component selected from the group of: (1) ethylene and &#x3b1;-olefin copolymers having a density of less than about 0.915 g/cc, (2) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl acrylates, (3) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl substituted alkyl acrylates and (4) ionomers, the first component being present in an amount from about 99% to about 55% by weight of the blend, a second component in an amount by weight of the blend from about 45% to about 1% and consists of one or more polymers of the group: (1) propylene containing polymers, (2) polybutene polymers, (3) polymethylpentene polymers, (4) cyclic olefin containing polymers and (5) bridged polycyclic hydrocarbon containing polymers; and the film has a modulus of elasticity when measured in accordance with ASTM D882 of less than about 60,000 psi, an internal haze when measured in accordance with ASTM D1003 of less than about 25%, an internal adhesion ranking of greater than about 2, a sample creep at 120&#xb0; C. under 27 psi loading of less than or equal to 150% for a film having a thickness of from about 5 mils to about 15 mils, and the film can be heat sealed into a container having seals wherein the seals remain intact when the container is autoclaved at 121&#xb0; C. for one hour.

Method and process for enhancing properties and medical tubing performance in a polybutadiene material

The present invention provides a polymer blend for fabricating monolayer films or a layer within a multilayer film. The blend has a first component and a second component. The first component is selected from the group of: (1) an ethylene and &#x3b1;-olefin copolymer having a density of less than about 0.915 g/cc, (2) lower alkyl acrylates, (3) lower alkyl substituted alkyl acrylates and (4) ionomers. The first component should be present in an amount from about 99% to about 55% by weight of the blend. The second component in an amount by weight of the blend from 45% to about 1% and consists of one or more polymers of the group: (1) propylene containing polymers, (2) polybutene polymers, (3) polymethylpentene polymers, (4) cyclic olefin containing polymers and (5) bridged polycyclic hydrocarbon containing polymers. When the blend is fabricated into a film it has a modulus of elasticity when measured in accordance with ASTM D882 of less than about 60,000 psi, an internal haze when measured in accordance with ASTM D1003 of less than about 25%, an internal adhesion ranking of greater than about two, a sample creep at 120&#xb0; C. under 27 psi loading of less than or equal to 150% for a film having a thickness from about 5 mils to about 15 mils, and the film being capable or being heat sealed into a container having seals wherein the seals remain intact when the container is autoclaved at 121&#xb0; C. for one hour.

Autoclavable, non-adherent, heat sealable polymer blends for fabricating monolayer and multiple layered films

Multiple component polymer compositions for fabrication into articles. In particular, polymeric compositions comprising a heat resistant polymer; a radio frequency ('RF') susceptible polymer; a compatibilizing polymer; the composition having physical properties within a range a&#x3c;40,000 psi; b&#x3e;=70%; c&#x3c;30%; d&#x3e;1.0; e&#x3c;0.1%; f&#x3c;0.1%; g&#x3e;=0.05; h&#x3c;=60%; i=0; wherein: a is the mechanical modulus of the composition measured according to ASTM D-882; b is the percent recovery in length of the composition after an initial 20% deformation; c is the optical haze of the composition being 9 mils in thickness according to ASTM D-1003; d is the loss tangent of the composition at 1 Hz measured at melt processing temperatures; e is the elemental halogen content by weight of the composition; f is the low molecular weight water soluble fraction of the composition; g is the dielectric loss between 1 and 60 MHz and over temperatures of 25 to 250&#xb0; C. of the composition; h sample creep measured at 121&#xb0; C. for a 1 inch strip of the composition under 27 psi loading; and, i indicates the composition exhibits no strain whitening after being strained at moderate speeds of about 20 inches (50 cm) per minute to about 100% elongation (twice the original length) and the presence of strain whitening (indicated by 1) or lack thereof (indicated by 0) is noted.

Polymeric compositions for medical packaging and devices

A connector, a container using the connector and a method for establishing fluid communication with a container. The connector may include a first coupling member and a second coupling member. The container may attach to the first coupling member. The first coupling member may have a first passageway with a spike and a membrane located therein. The second coupling member may have a second passageway. The first coupling member may engage the second coupling member and may further pierce the membrane with the spike. The first coupling member may further have a female end of a luer-lock, and the second coupling member may have a male end of a luer-lock. The first coupling member and the second coupling member may be engaged by twisting the male end and the female end of the coupling members to form the connector and establish fluid communication with the container.

The present invention provides a flowable material container closure assembly having a port tube and a membrane tube. The port tube (I) has a first layer and a second layer, (A) the first layer is a polymer blend and (B) the second layer is disposed coaxially within the first layer; and the membrane tube (II) is disposed coaxially within the port tube, the membrane tube has an outer layer, a core layer and an inner layer.
