A detector assembly for a duct of a heating ventilation and air conditioning system includes an outer housing having at least one through hole formed therein, an inner sampling support receivable within a hollow interior of the outer housing, and at least one detector mounted to the inner sampling support. The at least one detector is axially aligned with the at least one through hole when the inner sampling support is installed within the hollow interior of the outer housing. The at least one detector is operable to sample air within the duct to detect a hazardous condition.

An optical particulate detection system for an aircraft is provided. The optical particulate detection system includes an optical particulate detector and a controller. The optical particulate detector includes at least two optical sources and at least one optical sensor distributed in series with respect to a flow path of a component surface of the aircraft. The controller is configured to interface with the optical particulate detector, monitor the at least one optical sensor, and characterize one or more particles of foreign object debris based on a pulse width and two or more scattering ratios determined with respect to light emitted from the at least two optical sources.

Optical particulate detection for an aircraft

A system for measuring a status of a detection device having a component transformable between a plurality of configurations includes a fiber optic cable for transmitting light. The at least one fiber optic cable defines a node arranged in communication with the component. A control system is operably coupled to the fiber optic cable such that scattered light reflected from the component and returned to the node is transmitted to the control system. The control system analyzes the scattered light to determine the configuration of the component.

Particulate ingestion sensor for gas turbine engines

A combined capability sensor includes a first laser source and a second laser source. The first laser source is configured to emit light having a wavelength in at least one of an infrared spectrum and a visible spectrum and the second laser source is configured to emit light having a wavelength in a blue or ultraviolet spectrum. A director is configured to direct the first and second laser source to a detection zone. A first sensor is configured to detect scattered light originating from the first laser source, thereby detecting a presence of smoke in the detection zone. A second sensor is configured to detect fluoresced light originating from the second laser source, thereby detecting a presence of a biological agent in the detection zone.

Fluorescence enhanced LIDAR based particulate detector

An illustrative example monitoring device includes a plurality of radiation sources that respectively emit a different type of radiation. At least one radiation detector is situated to detect radiation emitted the radiation sources and reflected off airborne particles. The radiation detector has a first sensitivity configured for detecting a concentration of the particles within a first range and a second sensitivity configured for detecting a concentration of the particles within a second, different range. A processor is configured to determine a ratio of the types of detected radiation, a type of the particles reflecting the detected radiation based on the ratio, and the concentration of the particles reflecting the detected radiation based on the first or second sensitivity.

A method of characterizing an aerosol, the method comprising illuminating aerosol particles located within a measurement volume with a first electromagnetic radiation pulse emitted from a first source and receiving one or more electromagnetic radiation returns that have been scattered by the aerosol particles illuminated by the first electromagnetic radiation pulse at one or more sensors, illuminating the aerosol particles within the measurement volume with a second electromagnetic radiation pulse emitted from a second source and receiving a one or more electromagnetic radiation returns scattered by the aerosol particles illuminated by the second electromagnetic radiation pulse at the one or more sensors, determine at least one of intensity based on the one or more electromagnetic radiation returns, and determine an aerosol parameter based on an algorithm and the at least one intensity.

A device, including a non-radioactive detection source, configured to detect airborne particulates and/or gases in an environment by applying a voltage bias to the non-radioactive detection source to create at least one detecting condition, and determining if airborne particulates are present within the at least one detection condition. A method of creating a detecting condition for airborne particulates and/or gases in an environment, the method including the steps of coupling a pair of electrical conductors to a nanocellular material, and applying a voltage bias to the pair of electrical conductors.

Methods of creation and use of a non-radioactive detection methodology

An exemplary detector includes a source of radiation. A detection chamber is configured to at least temporarily contain a fluid. At least some of the radiation ionizes at least some of the fluid. At least some of the radiation produces light in the detection chamber. An ionization sensor provides an output corresponding to an amount of fluid ionization in the detection chamber. A light sensor provides an output corresponding to an amount of the light detected by the light sensor.
