In one embodiment, a computing system may display, to a viewer, a virtual surface rendered based on a first mesh of the virtual surface. In response a trigger condition, the system may generate a second mesh for the virtual surface based at least on a distance of the viewer to the virtual surface. The second mesh may include at least one new vertex with respect to the first mesh. The new vertex may be associated with a target position. The system may determine a starting position on the first mesh corresponding to the new vertex of the second mesh. The system may generate a sequence of frames depicting the virtual surface undergoing a progressive transition process using a progressively-changing mesh with a progressively-changing vertex that corresponds to the new vertex. The progressively-changing vertex may progressively move from the starting position to the target position during the progressive transition process.

Implementations of the present disclosure are directed to a method, a system, and an article for rendering shadows in a graphical image of a virtual environment. An example computer-implemented method can include: generating a digital image of a virtual environment; providing a depth buffer for the digital image that includes a depth value for each pixel in the digital image; rendering a first shadow in a first region of the digital image by, at least, adjusting colors and depth values for pixels in the first region; and rendering a second shadow in a second region that partially overlaps the first region by, at least: (i) identifying a shadow rendering region to be within the second region but outside the first region, based on the adjusted depth values; and (ii) adjusting colors and depth values for pixels in the shadow rendering region.

Frame animation data is computed for a series of frames representative, in animated sequence, of a scene containing deformable geometry. The frame animation data includes a control mesh descriptive of the three-dimensional surface of graphical elements occurring within the scene. Based on the frame animation data, respective illumination values are computed for the individual polygons of the control mesh to determine the global illumination of the scene. The computation is performed iteratively utilizing the directional light functionally emitted from source polygons to receiver polygons to determine global illumination. The directional light emitter values are further utilized, in combination with material properties, specular illumination contributions to the global illumination of the receiver polygons.

System and methods for real-time rendering with global and specular illumination

A method and apparatus for optimizing register allocation during scheduling and execution of program code in a hardware environment. The program code can be compiled to optimize execution given predetermined hardware constraints. The hardware constraints can include the number of register read and write operations that can be performed in a given processor pass. The optimizer can initially schedule the program using virtual registers and a goal of minimizing the amount of active registers at any time. The optimizer reschedules the program to assign the virtual registers to actual physical registers in a manner that minimizes the number of processor passes used to execute the program.

Method and apparatus for register allocation in presence of hardware constraints

Frames of image data representative of a scene containing deformable geometry subject to global illumination are computed in real-time. Frame animation data is computed for a series of frames representative, in animated sequence, of a scene containing deformable geometry. The frame animation data includes vertex attributes of a control mesh descriptive of the three dimensional surface of graphical elements occurring within the scene. Based on the frame animation data, respective illumination values are computed for the individual polygons of the control mesh to determine the global illumination of the scene. The computation is performed iteratively with respect to each frame set of frame animation data until a qualified convergence of global illumination is achieved. Within each iteration, the respective illumination values are determined based on the frame-to-frame coherent polygon illumination values determined in a prior iteration. Qualified convergence is achieved within the frame-to-frame interval defined by a real-time frame rate.

System and methods for real-time rendering of deformable geometry with global illumination

Antialiasing shadows using a programmable graphics processor. Shadows are antialiased using dependent texture mapping to displace shadow map coordinates. A jitter texture is applied to an object in screen space using non-perspective corrected jitter texture coordinates. The jitter texture coordinates are used to read texture coordinate displacements stored as the jitter texture. The texture coordinate displacements are combined with the shadow, map coordinates to generate displaced shadow map coordinates. The displaced shadow map coordinates are used to read depth values stored as the shadow map. The depth values read from the shadow map are compared with corresponding depth values of the object in light source coordinate space to determine whether each fragment within the object is either 'in shadow' or 'out of shadow'.
