Methods, systems, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on a computer storage medium, for determining, for each of a plurality of resource requests for a resource that includes first content, whether a supplemental content event has occurred. The occurrence of the supplemental content event indicates that supplemental content will likely be served to a user device after the resource is served to the user device. For each resource request for which the supplemental content event has occurred, the resource is served with a defined supplemental content environment in which the supplemental content is to be displayed, the supplemental content environment being of dimensions that accommodate display of the supplemental content without adjustment of display of the first content upon the user device rendering the resource. For each resource request for which the supplemental content event has not occurred, the resource is served without the defined supplemental content environment.

Supplemental content prediction to reduce blink-in effect

A system and computer-implemented method are provided for associating categories with business names for generalizing search queries, the method including identifying one or more businesses within a first geographic region, determining a business name and one or more categories for each of the one or more businesses, generating one or more name components for each of the one or more businesses from the name of the business, generating one or more name component groups from the name components of the one or more businesses, each name component group including one or more identical name components, determining for each name component group, if the one or more name components within the name component group are associated with businesses that share one or more common categories and associating the one or more common categories with the name component of the name component group.

Category generalization for search queries

A content item, e.g., an icon or advertisement content, is selected for placement in a display environment (e.g., on a map or adjacent to a map) in response to a request for the display environment based on a probability that the content item is relevant to a user that is requesting the display environment. The selection is facilitated by content targeting data (e.g., feature selection and query submission) that can be received from user devices while the map space is presented.

Content item selection

A mobile device associated with a mobile asset (and a method operating on such a mobile device) determines the location of the mobile asset and reports the location to a tracking server. To conserve power and bandwidth resources, the mobile device reports the current location and movement data of the mobile asset initially and then upon determination of the existence of one or more conditions. Potential conditions that could cause the mobile device to send an update to the server are a change from one road to another, a change in velocity or direction greater than a predetermined threshold, a deviation from an assigned or predicted route, or a difference between a current location and a predicted location.

Dynamic determination of device location reporting frequency

Systems and methods for selecting advertisements for presentation in a map space are disclosed. Map requests are received, map spaces identified, advertisement bids are received for advertisement space within the map spaces, and advertisements are selected for presentation in the map space based on the advertisement bids. The advertisement bids can be selected through an auction.
