The present invention relates to the use of polymers comprising a block copolymer containing at least one group A and at least one group B in which each group A is a polymeric block built up from an ethylenically unsaturated polymerisable monomer and each group B is a polymeric block built up from an alkylene oxide, alkylene glycol or cyclic ether monomer or a mixture thereof for promoting soil release during laundering of a textile fabric and processes for their preparation. Laundry cleaning compositions comprising such polymers, a method of promoting soil release during laundering of a textile fabric and the use of such polymers in the manufacture of a laundry cleaning composition for effecting soil release from a laundry item form other aspects of the invention.

Polymers for laundry cleaning compositions

A laundry cleaning composition comprises a graft polysaccharide polymer benefit agent capable of imparting a benefit such as soil release or fabric care, and at least one additional laundry cleaning ingredient.

Use of graft polymers in fabric cleaning

A water soluble package comprises a polymeric film, the polymeric film comprising a polymeric backbone derived from a polymer which is water soluble, as defined herein, and one or more derivatising groups attached to the backbone, the derivatising group(s) being derived from a material having a ClogP of from 0.5 to 6 and/or being derived from a parent material comprising a C4 to C22 hydrocarbyl chain.

The invention relates to polysaccharide graft polymers useful for incorporation as benefit agents in laundry detergent and fabric treatment compositions, and their preparation. The invention also relates to substituted polysaccharides useful as macroinitiator intermediates for the preparation of the polysaccharide graft polymers, and the preparation of the macroinitiators. The polysaccharide graft polymers may be used, for example, to impart soil release and/or fabric care benefits to laundry detergent or fabric treatment compositions.

Cellobiose esters and particularly &agr; cellobiose octanonanoate has been found able to structure water-immiscible liquids well, and in particular can produce clear structured emulsions. However, such emulsions tend to lose clarity or structural strength during storage. Deviating from &agr;-cellobiose octanonanoate can result in impaired clarity and/or impaired hardness of emulsion sticks. However, acylated cellobiose which contains acyl substituents of formula &mdash;O&mdash;CO&mdash;R in which R represents an n-octyl residue and the percentage Y of the nonanoate acyl substituent &mdash;O&mdash;CO&mdash;R at the anomeric carbon is at least 60% and the percentage A of &agr; anomer is greater than the anomer and not higher than A&equals;74.5 &plus;0.2Y when Y is up to 92% and not higher than A&equals;161&minus;0.74Y when Y is greater than 92% offers the production of sticks combining structurant stability with product clarity and hardness.
