Biodegradable scaffold for wound closure including a central rod and upper and lower plates that each at least partially circumscribe the central rod. Each of the upper and lower plates is attached to the central rod and includes an upper section and a lower section that are connected by a helical middle section. The upper section and lower section of the upper plate respectively include first and second bottom surfaces and the upper section and lower section of the lower plate respectively include first and second top surfaces that are respectively spaced apart from and face the first and second bottom surfaces. The first and second bottom surfaces and first and second top surfaces may lie in different planes that are each perpendicular to a central longitudinal axis of the central rod.

Implantable tissue scaffold

A biodegradable scaffold for wound closure including a central rod and two spaced-apart plates. The central rod may have an engagement block on top for stabilizing an implanting tool. The two spaced-apart plates include an upper plate connected to the central rod and a lower plate connected to the central rod. Each of the upper and lower plates may include perforations which may be useful for detachably connecting an implanting tool and which encourage ingrowth of the tissue. The biodegradable scaffold allows tension free anatomic alignment of tissue within the plates and facilitates wound healing. The upper and lower plate may have a helical portion, in which each plate may extend around the central rod. The helical portion serves to draw or pull tissue around the wound defect into the scaffold in the course of deploying the scaffold.

A biodegradable device for maintaining the alignment of the edges of a trocar defect, consisting of two bases coupled and offset by a connector. The first base to be positioned below the defect and a second base above. The first base has a threaded hole from its upper surface but not through the lower surface. The connector attached to the bases such that there is a hole aligned with the threaded hole in the first base allowing a device to mate with the threads in the first base. The second base has a hole aligned with the hole in the connector and wide enough to allow a device to mate with the threads in the first base. The device is arranged so the distance between the lower surface of the second base and upper surface of the first base holds the fascia around the trocar defect.

Implantable scaffold and method

A method for maintaining the alignment of the edges of a trocar defect by inserting into a defect a device for compressing the tissue such that part of the device is above while the other is below the defect, then pulling back on the device so that the part below the defect is up against the defect, then while holding the device below the defect in place, push down on the part above the wound so that it compresses the tissue. Finally, release the device from the insertion tool.

Biodegradable apparatus and method for closure of trocar defects

A biodegradable device for providing scaffolding for a trocar defect to promote healing. The device consists of an upper and lower scaffold, offset by a connector. The device is arranged so the distance between the lower surface of the upper scaffolding and upper surface of the lower scaffolding holds the fascia around the trocar defect while promoting tissue growth. The surfaces of the scaffolding in contact with the trocar defect are textured to maximize adherence to tissue.

Implantable biodegradable wound closure device

An implantable biodegradable device consisting of an inner button attached to a cylindrical segment, and an outer button attached to a retainment feature. The cylindrical segment is threaded on one end, with a surface groove. The retainment feature consists of radial strips with bent ends. The diameter of the radial strips is slightly larger than the outer diameter of the cylinder. The bent ends fit into the groove. An insertion tool can attach to the threads in the cylinder and push the inner button through a wound, then, holding the inner button in place, push the outer button toward the inner button until the bent ends engage with the groove. The top of the threaded end of the cylindrical segment is adjacent to the back surface of the outer button when the bent ends of the retainment feature are engaged with the groove.

Implantable biodegradable wound closure device and method

A method for maintaining the alignment of the edges of a wound in the fascia, using a wound closure device, which is a biodegradable compressible structure capable of maintaining the alignment of the edges of the wound during the healing process, an insertion tool for guiding the device into the wound, and a compression tool for compressing the device against the fascia and associated layers. After connecting the insertion tool to the wound closure device, the insertion tool is used to guide the wound closure device through the wound and hold the device in place, The compression tool compresses the wound closure device while the insertion tool holds the device in place. Finally, remove the insertion and compression tools, allowing the wound closure device to remain in place long enough for the wound to heal before the wound closure device degrades.
