Users may build structures having an area of effect surrounding the structure in a game as a result of in-game actions. In-game actions may include building an instance of a structure controlled by a user. The structure may have an associated area of effect configured to impact at least one of resource accumulation, structure properties, and event frequency within the area of effect. The area of effect may be presented on a map with information relating to its impact. The area of effect may impact the cost of building other buildings therein, the rate at which resources are accumulated therein, the defensive ratings of other buildings therein, the effectiveness of other buildings therein in carrying out an intended functionality, and the frequency at which various positive or negative events occur therein. Some buildings can only be built within the area of effect of a specific other building.

An approach to facilitating battle-attribute-based arrangement of map areas is provided. Battle-related records that indicate battle attribute values associated with users of a game space may be maintained. Responsive to the battle attribute values associated with individual ones of the users corresponding to the battle attribute values associated with other ones of the users, generation of one or more secondary maps having secondary areas associated with the individual users that are arranged together with secondary areas associated with the other users may be initiated. For example, the secondary area associated with a first user and the secondary area associated with a second user may be arranged together in one of the secondary maps responsive to a first battle attribute value associated with the first user corresponding to a second battle attribute value associated with the second user.

A health parameter may be determined for the characters such that responsive to the health parameter reaching a threshold level, the character may be considered dead in the online game. After character death, users must take on new characters to interact with the online game. User-level inventories may be managed that include one or more virtual items which are made available to the user even after the death of a character which was used when the item was acquired.

The disclosure relates to systems and methods for providing an enhanced research game mechanic that simulates research in a virtual simulation such as a game. The system may engage the user in the virtual discovery process and therefore provide the user with a more realistic sense of discovery. The game may include a research space having a plurality of spatially arranged positions. The discovery locations may be hidden from the user's view until discovered. To make a virtual discovery, a user may interact with the positions of a corresponding discovery location. For example, the user may select or otherwise indicate a position in the research space. The system may determine whether selected or indicated position corresponds to a position assigned to the discovery location. The user may interact with the position in other ways such as by positioning a research unit at a position of the research space.
