Recoil and spinal armor support system

A medical device and method of using the device such as during laparascopic procedures for reducing the size of specimens so that they can be removed from the body by a minimally invasive surgical technique. The device is thermally activated and is useable in conjunction with or as part of a tissue isolation bag. The device includes an inner wall defining an empty space for receiving surgically removed tissue. The member is in an expanded condition at body temperature but shrinks to a smaller specimen reducing configuration wherein the empty space becomes smaller when the member is heated to a temperature above body temperature. By careful selection of the material for the specimen reduction device, a range of specific shrink temperatures may be obtained which are suitable for use within the body. For example, the member can be of a shape memory metal or a shape memory polymer.

A dispenser for packages of sterile suture materials. The dispenser will dispense either single packages or a plurality of packages. The dispenser has means for determining the quantity of sutures remaining in the dispenser.

A cartridge for holding a plurality of plastic, snap-closure hemostatic clips in a manner which allows each clip to be individually loaded into a forceps-type clip applier. The cartridge consists of an elongated body having a stepped central rail on which open clips are positioned with the head of the clip resting on the step on one side of the rail, and the tail of the clip projecting into a space on the opposite side of the rail. Means are provided for retaining the clips in position on the rail until loaded into the clip applier.

A disposable container consisting of a tetrahedral-shaped chamber and a base member formed from a paperboard blank pre-coated with an adhesive layer and having folding guides at desired locations to provide the base with arms to hold the chamber. The chamber is formed from a segment of flexible plastic tubing, sealed at the bottom and sealed at the top on a line transverse to the sealing line at the bottom to form the tetrahedral-shaped chamber. The chamber is stably mounted on the base member, which provides a wide surface for supporting and protecting the tetrahedral chamber and also provides labeling surfaces for the container. Also set forth is a method for manufacturing and filling containers by folding a blank pre-coated with adhesive along pre-set folding guides to form a base member, attaching the base member to a tubing segment, sealing the tubing segment at one end, filling the tubing segment, and then sealing the other end of the tubing segment on a line transverse to the first sealing line, to form a tetrahedral-shaped chamber for the container.

Suture package

A package for double-armed sutures equipped with a pledget and means for centering the pledget on the suture during removal of the suture from the package. The package comprises a double-armed suture in a storage compartment with the armed ends of the suture extending out of the compartment, a pledget slidably affixed to the suture strand approximate to one needle, and pledget centering means intermediate the pledget and said needle. Preferred pledget centering means comprise an integral passageway in the package material for the double suture strand and a barrier associated with said passageway which restrains the pledget as the suture is withdrawn from the package through the passageway, whereby the pledget is slidably displaced along the suture until the total length of the suture is withdrawn and the suture and pledget are released from the package.

A laminated molded sterilizable package for sutures is constructed of a first molded sheet and a second cover sheet. The molded sheet has a centrally located needle chamber recess and a long, narrow suture channel extending outward of and in a generally spiral path around the needle chamber. In a preferred embodiment, the suture channel is characterized by having at least one curve in a reverse direction from the general direction of the spiral. The package is opened by peeling a portion of the cover sheet from the molded sheet to uncover the needle chamber and an adjacent length of the suture channel. The package is suitable for use with heavy denier monofilament sutures which may be withdrawn from the package singly or in groups. Sutures delivered from the package are characterized by having only gentle bends with no loops or coils and are suitable for use with little or no further straightening.

The chamber is formed from a segment of flexible plastic tubing, sealed at the bottom and sealed at the top on a line transverse to the sealing line at the bottom to form the tetrahedral-shaped chamber. The chamber is stably mounted on the base member, which provides a wide surface for supporting and protecting the tetrahedral chamber and also provides labeling surfaces for the container.
