Generating ferrate ex situ by activating persulfate with BOF steel slag fines and/or ferric iron. A persulfate solution flows therethrough or thereover the BOF steel slag within, for example, a filter, fluidized bed or continuously stirred tank reactor. The ex situ generation will produce a leachate that contains multiple reactive oxidant species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide (HO), superoxide (O2.), sulfate radicals, hydroxyl radicals (OH.) and uniquely ferrate species including Fe IV, V and VI. These ROS will destroy organic compounds, sterilize, and can oxidize inorganics and a wide range of targeted contaminants in distressed water (e.g., drinking water, process water, wastewater, industrial process streams/waters, municipal process streams/waters, landfill leachate, sewage/septic systems, bilge waters, drilling fluids, mine effluents). The use of BOF steel slag avoids the need for additional pH buffers and ferrate stabilizers and is an industrial byproduct comprised of recycled materials instead of a specialized reagent.

Ex situ ferrate generation

A method for controlling xylophages (e.g., termites, Asian Beetle, Emerald Ash borer, Weevils, Deathwatch Caterpillars, cockroaches) by inhibiting methane production of methanogenic Archaea in the digestive tract thereof. The inhibiting of the critical biochemical pathways specific to the methanogenic Archaea is achieved by contacting the xylophage with one or more antimethanogenic reagent (AMR) compounds. The AMRs may include, for example, naturally-occurring statins (which may be found in red yeast rice) or derivatives thereof, linoleic acid or related compounds, essential oils, certain synthetic compounds or combinations thereof. As a result, the effectiveness of the methanogenic Archaea to produce methane is compromised. This subsequently results into the malfunctioning of the xylophages' digestive system and provides a safe, natural, green and sustainable means of controlling the xylophages.

Xylophage control using antimethanogenic reagents

A method for inhibiting methane production in the digestive tract of methanogenic Archaea (e.g., termites, other wood boring pests). The inhibiting of the critical biochemical pathways specific to the methanogenic Archaea is achieved by having the methanogenic Archaea ingest an anti-methanogenic compound. The anti-methanogenic compound may include, for example, naturally-occurring statins or derivatives thereof, linoleic acid or related compounds, essential oils, or some combination thereof. The naturally-occurring statins can be found in the red yeast rice extract or related biomass. As a result, the effectiveness of the methanogenic Archaea to produce methane is compromised, which subsequently results into the malfunctioning of the xylophages' digestive system. This provides a safe, natural, green and sustainable means of controlling many pests such as the Asian Beetle, Emerald Ash borer, Weevils, Deathwatch Caterpillars, and termites.

Inhibition of methanogenesis to control wood boring insects and pestilence

A method for inhibiting methane production in naturally occurring or induced reducing conditions, thus subsequently resulting into inhibition of the biomethylation process of the heavy metals is disclosed. The disclosed inhibiting composition blocks 3-hydroxy-3-ethylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase, and 8-hydroxy-5-deazaflavin (coenzyme F) in the methane production pathway, due to the presence of lovastatin in the red yeast rice. As a result the methanogens are unable to produce enough quantities of methane that will result to the production of methylmetal(loids), which are usually volatile and more toxic than their inorganic counterparts due to increased water solubility and hydrophobicity.

Heavy metal stabilization and methane inhibition during induced or naturally occurring reducing conditions in contaminated media

A method for the removal of semi-volatile organic compounds in soils, sludges, groundwater, process water, and wastewater is presented. Oxidation and biological attenuation processes utilize peroxide, persulfates, percarbonates, and/or other oxidants with trivalent metals, such as ferric iron (Fe3+) or manganic ion (Mn) as activators. The resulting chemical oxidation process yields degradation compounds which facilitate further attenuation via biological processes.

Chemical oxidation and biological attenuation process for the treatment of contaminated media

This method of restricting methane production in methanogenic bacteria, by the use of the enzyme and coenzyme inhibitors, works during anaerobic reductive dechlorination. Various compounds such as, but not limited to, red yeast rice, vitamin B10 derivatives, and ethanesulfonates are utilized to disrupt these different enzyme and coenzyme systems responsible for the production of methane. This method affects the competition of the methanogen and halo bacteria for the organic hydrogen donors that are injected in the soil and groundwater system during the remediation process.

Inhibition of methane production during anaerobic reductive dechlorination

A method for the removal of semi-volatile organic compounds in soils, sludges, groundwater, process water, and wastewater is presented. Oxidation and biological attenuation processes utilize persulfates and other oxidants with trivalent metals, such as ferrous iron or Mn, as activators. The resulting chemical oxidation process yields degradation compounds which facilitate further attenuation via biological processes.

Anaerobic reductive dechlorination processes remove chlorinated solvents from contaminated subsurface soil and ground water. The presence of organic hydrogen donors enables anaerobic microorganisms present in the subsurface soil and groundwater to accelerate the reductive dechlorination process. The present invention provides an alternative method to control the release rate of organic hydrogen donors during dechlorination. The invention utilizes encapsulated substrates to control the release rate of organic hydrogen donors, therefore accelerating the biotic process of anaerobic reductive dechlorination.

Use of encapsulated substrates that control the release rates of organic hydrogen donors

Accelerated dechlorination of soil and water contaminated with chlorinated solvents in situ is achieved by delivering ferric ammonium citrate into the soils and/or water. The induction of ferric ammonium citrate into sulfate-rich reducing conditions initiates a combined abiotic and biotic mechanism for the dechlorination of subsurface contaminants. Initial and rapid removal of chlorinated solvents is achieved by way of reductive transformation, a mechanism utilizing the creation of an iron-bound soil mineral (pyrite) followed by stimulating conditions for enhanced biological natural attenuation.

Utilization of ferric ammonium citrate for in situ remediation of chlorinated solvents

The induction of reducing conditions and stimulating anaerobic process through the addition of species of seaweed (Dulse, Nori,, and Kelp) to accomplish accelerated dechlorinization of soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents and heavy metals.

Method for the treatment of ground water and soils using mixtures of seaweed and kelp

The induction of reducing conditions and stimulating anaerobic process through the addition of dried micro-blue green algae (-, and) and seaweed (Dulse, Nori, and Kelp) to accomplish accelerated dechlorinization of soil and groundwater contaminated with chlorinated solvents and heavy metals.

Method for the treatment of ground water and soils using dried algae and other dried mixtures

Accelerated dechlorination of soil and water contaminated with chlorinated solvents is achieved by stimulating anaerobic microorganisms and thus increasing the rate of biological mineralization of the solvents. This is accomplished by a treatment process consisting of colloidal suspension of metal powder, an organic hydrogen donor, chemical oxygen scavengers in solution with essential nutrients, and vitamin stimulants such as B2 and B12 delivered via compressed gases N or CO2 so as not to oxygenate an environment targeted for anaerobic processes. The treatment stimulates naturally occurring microorganisms while oxidizing dissolved phase target compounds via the surface action of the iron particles resulting in the breakdown of chlorinated solvents such as tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, carbon tetrachloride and their daughter products.

Method for accelerated dechlorination of matter

Accelerated dechlorination of soil and water contaminated with chlorinated solvents is achieved by stimulating anaerobic microorganisms and thus increasing the rate of biological mineralization of the solvents. This is accomplished by a treatment process consisting of colloidal suspension of iron powder, polylactate ester such as glycerol tripolylactate, xylitol pentapolylactate, and sorbitol hexapolylactate, chemical oxygen scavengers in solution with essential nutrients, and vitamin stimulants such as B2 and B12 delivered via compressed gases N or C02 so as not to oxygenate an environment targeted for anaerobic processes. The treatment stimulates naturally occurring microorganisms while oxidizing dissolved phase target compounds via the surface action of the iron particles resulting in the breakdown of chlorinated solvents such as tetrachloroethene, trichloroethene, carbon tetrachloride and their daughter products.

A pressurized delivery system for in-situ delivery of sub-soil remediation compounds to underground contaminated matter includes a liquid diaphragm pump connected to an inflow source of water, the pump being also in fluid communication with a plurality of bioslurry tanks connected in parallel, the bioslurry tanks each having a drain. Valve means are located between the liquid diaphragm pump and each of the bioslurry tanks for controlling either the alternate or simultaneous flow of fluid from the pump to each of the bioslurry tanks. A second liquid diaphragm pump having an inlet port for receiving the combined flow of the bioslurry tanks has an outlet in fluid communication with a system discharge port. The system further includes a source of compressed gas in fluid communication with the discharge port. A discharge rod is connected to the discharge port for delivery of remedial fluids to underground soils. A gas pressure line leads from a source of compressed gas to the discharge port and is also in fluid communication with the feed tanks for storage of injectants under pressure, the feed tanks being individually pressurized by the selective fluid communication with the pressure line. Each feed tank includes a separately valved exhaust port connected to the system discharge port such that the source of injectant may be switched from the bioslurry tanks to any of the feed tanks without loss of delivery pressure. The source of pressurized gas may be a mechanical compressor or a stored compressed gas.
