A process for the production of diorganodisulfides by oxidation of meraptans in which the mercaptan is reacted with a halogen compound capable of releasing at least one halogen atom and taking up a hydrogen atom instead, the reaction being carried out at 0.degree. to 100.degree. C. in the presence of base and, optionally, a phase transfer catalyst.

The crosslinking of chlorinated polyethylene with 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole in the presence of a basic substance may be carried out easily and leads to improved vulcanizate properties if amido amines, for example tetraethylene pentamine distearate, are used as the basic substances.

Epoxidized and subsequently cross-linked esters of alcohols which are at least dihydric and unsaturated fatty acids may be used as active processing substance in polymers, in particular elastomers, at higher temperatures, in particular at higher vulcanization temperatures, than 'Factice'. They may be produced by a particularly elegant one-shot reaction.
