A system for suppressing unwanted signals in steerable microphone arrays. The lobes of a steerable microphone array are monitored, to identify lobes having large speech content and low noise content. One of the identified lobes is then used to deliver speech to a speech recognition system, as at a self-service kiosk.

Noise suppression in beam-steered microphone array

A self-service terminal having an acoustic interface is described. The terminal comprises a user locating mechanism, a controller, and an array of individually controllable acoustic elements. In use, the locating mechanism is operable to locate a user and to convey user location information to the controller, and the controller is operable to focus each acoustic element to the user's location to increase the privacy of the user in using the terminal. A method of interacting with a self-service terminal is also described.

Self-service terminal

A point-of-sale system which uses speech entry to identify and tally items without bar code labels, such as produce items. The system includes a microphone, a scale, and a terminal. The terminal uses the microphone to record words from a checker identifying a produce item during a transaction and prompts an operator to identify the produce item by speaking into the microphone when the produce item is placed upon the scale. The terminal also identifies a price for the item and enters the price into the transaction when the produce item is removed from the scale.
