Components of a projectile are held together by a captive collar that is internal to the projectile. The internal captive collar is rotated about a central boss, allowing external threads on the collar to engage one of the mating components and pull that mating component into the other mating component in an axial only translation. The internal captive collar is rotated using a geared-key during assembly. This key engages a geared crown feature of the captive collar, allowing it to rotate. After assembly, the gear key is removed from the assembly. Castellated features nest within slots to transmit torque in the assembled projectile.

A safe and reliable multi-component projectile enables cost effective manufacturing and assembly of the projectile. Major components of the projectile are joined by a plurality of shear pins interfacing with scalloped geometry of the components. The components are then held together by forcibly joining them using a hybrid annular-cantilevered snap fit joint. The tooth and groove arrangement exists where the teeth are at the end of a spring-leaf like feature of one of the mating parts and the groove is located on the opposite mating part.

A weapon stowage and mounting system for a military vehicle, wherein the weapon stowage and mounting system secures a weapon such as an M16 or M249 emplaced therein and retains such weapon from flying about as a secondary projectile in the event of a vehicle roll over, vehicle collision or vehicle blast event, The weapon stowage and mounting system allows for stowage of a weapon with loaded ammunition magazines, grenade launchers, forward hand grips, and/or rails and scopes still attached to the weapon, thus allowing maintenance of constant mission readiness. The weapon stowage and mounting system also includes a panel of UMWPE material that is positioned in line with the muzzle of a stowed weapon to fully capture a bullet in the event of an accidental discharge of the weapon.

An explosive breaching device is made from a surplus bomblet. The bomblet includes a shaped-charge liner, a steel fragmentation case with an open end, explosive material disposed between the shaped-charge liner and the steel fragmentation case, and a fuze. The fuze of the bomblet is removed and a shock-attenuating case is fixed adjacent to and coaxial with the steel fragmentation case. The shock-attenuating case may be made of a material having a speed of sound that differs from the speed of sound in the steel fragmentation case. A mild steel housing is fixed around the shock-attenuating case. A retaining sleeve may be fixed to the mild steel housing. The explosive breaching device may be mounted in an aiming device to direct the shaped-charge jet in a desired direction.

The mortar projectile has the capability of rapidly and accurately transporting the payloads to forward disposed combatants without interference of terrain or enemy action. The mortar projectile includes a shell body for housing the payload to be delivered, and a GPS-guided parafoil for delivering the payload to the designated remote target location.

Instrumented magnetic projectile

A bearing assembly for a first part that rotates with respect to a second part may include a slewing bearing having an axis of rotation and inner and outer races concentric with the axis of rotation. The inner race may be fixed to the first part and the outer race may be fixed to the second part. An inner, annular catch ring may be fixed to and adjacent to a lower surface of the inner race. An outer, annular catch ring may be fixed to and interposed between a lower surface of the outer race and the second part. A portion of the outer catch ring may be disposed below and adjacent to the lower surface of the inner race.

An inertial measurement unit may include a housing having an internal volume. The internal volume may have a dimension along an axis. A sensing element may be disposed in the internal volume. The sensing element may have a dimension along the axis that is less than the dimension of the internal volume. At least one piezoelectric actuator may be disposed in the housing adjacent the sensing element. When the at least one piezoelectric actuator is activated, it may prevent movement of the sensing element along the axis. When it is not activated, it may not prevent movement of the sensing element along the axis.

A stabilizing fin deployment apparatus may include a base assembly for attachment to the rear end of a projectile. The base assembly may include a base, a spacer, a fin mount, a gas cavity and an opening that extends from the rear end of the base to the gas cavity. A retention nut may engage the base and secure the fin mount and spacer to the base. A retention plug may be disposed in the opening in the base assembly. The retention plug may include at least one gas conduit between an outer surface of the retention plug and the gas cavity. A retention bolt may extend through the retention plug and may be fixed to the base. A plurality of fins hubs may be rotatably fixed to the base. A plurality of fins may be translatably connected to the fin hubs. When deployed, the fin hubs may rotate forward and the fins may translate outward far into the airstream.

A hand operated projectile extractor to remove unspent projectiles from 155 mm howitzers, which extractor is generally cylindrical, about 18 inches in length, with a handle extending from the rear thereof and with an overall weight of at least about 30 pounds, to provide enough momentum to eject the projectile. When rammed into the muzzle of a howitzer and down the barrel thereof, the ogive of the projectile enters the open front of the extractor's cylindrical body and will be impacted by a compression ring along the extractor's front edge, which compression ring has a minimum internal diameter of 4.75 inches and is formed of particular flat and curved surfaces which will not bind to either the projectile or the barrel.

A ballistic test projectile includes a nose section comprising a windshield and aft of the windshield, an ogive; a body section aft of the nose section, the body section comprising a generally cylindrical body connected to the ogive; a base section aft of the body section, the base section comprising a base adapter connected to the body and a base bottom connected to the base adapter; a base pressure gage disposed in the base bottom; at least one side pressure gage disposed in the body; and an electronics cup disposed in the body, the electronics cup comprising a battery cup, a signal conditioning cup, a multiplexer cup, an accelerometer cup and a transmitter cup.

Instrumented ballistic test projectile
