A fire-resistant material used in items such as sleeping bags, comforters, wearing apparel, upholstered furniture and mattress tops comprises a fiberfill batt and a layer of a fire-resistant aramid fiber contacting at least one side of the aramid fiber layer. The fiberfill batt may comprise synthetic fiber, which may be either polyester fiber or polyolefin fiber. Alternatively, the fiberfill batt may comprise natural fiber. The aramid fiber layer may comprise poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) fiber, poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber or a blend of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) and poly(p-phenylene terephthalamide) fiber. The aramid fiber layer may be needle-punched, hydroentangled, or laminated to the fiberfill batt.

Improved polyester fiberfill batts for apparel and other uses are prepared of polyester fiber and binder fiber, sprayed with a soft resin by oven bonding and hot roll treatment. This provides bonded batting which is characterized by softness and drapability, good insulating performance, low levels of fiber leakage or percolation through shell fabrics, enhanced durability when laundered by washing/drying or by dry cleaning, and enhanced structural integrity whereby it hangs freely without the need for quilting into small size panels.

A waterproof hydrophilic copolyetherester film having a high water vapor transmission rate can be secured surprisingly well to polyester fiberfill batting, so provides advantages in processing, and provides improved comfort to the wearer when the composite is used in apparel.

A fiberfill blend for making into a batt for heat-bonding of said batt to make it especially suitable for use in garments, consisting essentially of three ingredients: (a) two of the ingredients are crimped polyester staple fiber of lower denier than has commonly been used heretofore in polyester fiberfill, namely less than about 3 denier; (1) one of these polyester fiberfill ingredients is slickened with a durable coating; (2) the other of these polyester fiberfill ingredients is unslickened; each of ingredients (1) and (2) constitutes 25 to 75% of the polyester fiberfill (a); (b) the third ingredient is crimped binder fiber of a polymer having a melting point lower than that of the (a) ingredients; the binder fiber is present in amount 10 to 30% of the blend; the remaining 70 to 90% of the blend is the low denier polyester fiberfill. Such blends can be processed on conventional textile machinery to a stable thin batt, preferably by carding, needle-punching, and heating to activate the binder fibers, and these stable thin batts have high thermal insulation properties combined with attractive aesthetic properties that make them suitable for use in garments.
