A system and a method for a look-ahead drill bit. The system may comprise an ultra-deep transmitter operable to transmit a low frequency signal into a formation, a shallow tool operable to transmit a high frequency signal into the formation, at least one ultra-deep receiver operable to record a reflected low frequency signal, and at least one pair of collocated receivers, wherein the at least one pair of collocated receivers are operable to record a reflected high frequency signal. A method may comprise transmitting a high frequency signal from the shallow tool into the formation, transmitting a low frequency signal from the ultra-deep transmitter into the formation, evaluating the reflected high frequency signal and the reflected low frequency signal on an information handling system with a look-ahead inversion, and steering the bottom hole assembly in the formation based on the subterranean formation property.

Look-ahead resistivity configuration

A borehole imaging tool may include a plurality of resonator antennas for taking one or more downhole measurements disposed on a supporting structure of the borehole imaging tool. Additionally, each of the plurality of resonator antennas are separated into two or more groups of resonator antennas and each of the two or more groups of resonator antennas operate at a resonance frequency different from one another.

Multi-frequency borehole imagers utilizing resonator antennas

This disclosure presents an apparatus and system for lowering the cost of implementing a downhole sensor system using attachable collars. In some aspects, the attachable collar includes a transmitter component, while supporting electronics are included with a main collar, thereby reducing the cost of the attachable collar. The supporting electronics can send a transmission signal, a control signal, a synchronization clock signal, a selected transmission frequency, a sensor orientation and selection, and other instructions to the transmitter in the attachable collar. The receiver in the main collar can receive the output, as reflected by the subterranean formation, and transform the output to subterranean formation evaluation measurements. The measurements can be communicated to other systems. In some aspects, the attachable collar can include the receiver and the main collar can include the transmitter. In some aspects, additional attachable collars can be included on the drill string to increase the transmitter-receiver spacing.

Minimal electronic sensor collars

A method of fabricating a ferrite for use in a resistivity logging tool includes providing an uncured ferrite material, and pressing the uncured ferrite material into a channel to form the ferrite. The channel is defined on a surface of a bobbin associated with the resistivity logging tool, and the channel can be arcuate and extend at an angle offset from a central axis of the bobbin. The uncured ferrite material is then cured in place within the channels on the bobbin.

A method includes setting a value of a formation parameter for a subsurface formation and creating an initial three-dimensional (3D) model of the subsurface formation based on the formation parameter. The method also includes applying a constrained transformation to one or more inversion variables of the initial 3D model to create a variable-constrained 3D model of the subsurface formation and applying an unconstrained minimization operation to the variable-constrained 3D model to generate a first transformed 3D model. The method also includes inverting the first transformed 3D model to generate a first inverted 3D model of the subsurface formation.

3D inversion of deep resistivity measurements with constrained nonlinear transformations

One or more first formation measurements sensitive to around a sensor string of a drill string deployed in a subsurface formation is received, A 1-D inversion of the first formation measurements is performed at a first reference point. One or more second formation measurements sensitive to ahead of a drill bit of the drill string deployed in the subsurface formation is received. A 1-D inversion of the second formation measurements is performed at a second reference point ahead of the drill bit of the sensor string to determine formation properties ahead of the drill bit, wherein the 1-D inversion of the second formation measurements is based on inversion results associated with the 1-D inversion of the first formation measurements.

Data filtering and processing techniques for generating improved wellbore resistivity maps are contemplated. In some aspects, a process of the disclosed technology includes steps for receiving a plurality of measurement sets, wherein each measurement set comprises electromagnetic field data associated with a geologic formation at a corresponding plurality of predetermined depths, generating a plurality of one-dimensional (1D) inversion results based on the plurality of measurement sets, and performing a three-dimensional (3D) interpolation on the plurality of 1D inversion results to generate interpolated 3D resistivity data. In some aspects, the disclosed technology further includes steps for outputting a 3D resistivity map based on the interpolated 3D resistivity data. Systems and machine-readable media are also provided.

The compact sub assembly may comprise a deep transmitter disposed about one end of the compact sub assembly, a shallow dual transmitter disposed on the compact sub assembly between the deep transmitter and a second end of the compact sub assembly, a shallow dual-collocated receiver disposed on the compact sub assembly between the deep transmitter and a second end of the compact sub assembly, and a deep receiver disposed about the second end of the compact sub assembly. A well measurement system for decoupling a component signal may comprise a logging tool. The logging tool may comprise a first sub assembly and a conveyance attached to the logging tool. In examples the first sub assembly is a compact sub assembly comprising a deep transmitter, a shallow dual transmitter, a shallow dual-collocated receiver, and a deep receiver.

An antenna assembly includes a tool mandrel having a tool axis, and a coil including a plurality of windings wrapped about the tool mandrel at a winding angle offset from the tool axis. A soft magnetic band radially interposes the coil and the tool mandrel and extends about a circumference of the tool mandrel at a band angle parallel to the winding angle. The soft magnetic band includes a plurality of stacked inserts extending perpendicular to the coil about the circumference of the tool mandrel and each stacked insert includes a plurality of rods positioned end-to-end.

The tool includes a first antenna in the first slot and including a first plurality of windings wrapped about the mandrel, a second antenna co-located with the first antenna and in the second slot, and an antenna shield secured to the tool mandrel and in each of the first and second slots. The first antenna is arranged in a first orientation and at a first winding angle. The second antenna is arranged in a second orientation and at a second winding angle.

A logging tool includes a mandrel having a tool axis, a first loop antenna including first windings wrapped about the mandrel, a second loop antenna co-located with the first loop antenna and including second windings wrapped about the mandrel, and a shield secured to the mandrel. The first loop antenna is in a first orientation and the first windings are wrapped at a first angle. The second loop antenna is in a second orientation opposite the first orientation and the second windings are wrapped at a second angle. The shield includes first slots overlapping and along the first loop antenna and second slots overlapping and along the second loop antenna. The first slots define a first trace angle with respect to the tool axis and different from the first angle. The second slots defines a second trace angle with respect to the tool axis and different from the first angle.

An antenna assembly includes a tool mandrel having a tool axis and a coil including a plurality of windings wrapped about the tool mandrel at a winding angle offset from the tool axis. An antenna shield is secured to the tool mandrel and positioned radially outward from the coil. The antenna shield defines a plurality of slots extending perpendicular to the coil at any angular location about a circumference of the tool mandrel and the plurality of slots is provided in two or more dissimilar lengths.

Stacked soft magnetic inserts and slotted shield designs for tilted coil antennas

An apparatus for measuring resistivity downhole in a well includes a tool having at least one transmitter antenna and receiver antenna. The transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna are tilted at angles such that signals from layers between the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna are at least reduced. Alternatively, the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna are tilted at angles such that signals from layers being outside a region between the transmitter antenna and the receiver antenna are at least reduced. Signals from multiple collocated antennas are combined to produce synthetical tilt angles. Tilted transmitter and receiver pairs are used to focus resistivity measurements ahead of the bit or around the tool, based on which region of signals are at least reduced.
