A projectile for firing from a launcher includes a propulsion stage having non-axisymmetric boosters arranged about a longitudinal axis of the propulsion stage. The propulsion stage may further include a central booster about which the non-axisymmetric boosters are arranged.

Cluster rocket motor boosters

A flight vehicle includes a nose portion, a fuselage retaining structure aft of the nose portion, and an axial motor for expelling axial thrust along a longitudinal axis of the flight vehicle. Radial motors are coupled to the retaining structure and axisymmetrically arranged about the axial motor. Each radial motor is configured to expel radial thrust radially outwardly in respect to the flight vehicle. Roll thrusters are operatively coupled with the radial motors and coupled to the fuselage retaining structure. The roll thrusters are configured to provide a roll moment of the flight vehicle about a central longitudinal axis of the flight vehicle. Ejectors are operatively coupled to the radial motors, and a controller is operatively coupled to the radial motors and the ejectors. The controller is configured to selectively fire and selectively eject the radial motors to maintain relative centering of a center of gravity of the flight vehicle.

Rocket cluster divert and attitude control system

A projectile includes a propulsion booster for producing pressurized gases, a nozzle for expelling the pressurized gases produced by the booster, and a supplementary integrated actuation system. The integrated actuation system selectively directs propellant from a storage reservoir of the integrated actuation system through an interiorly-located outlet of the integrated actuation system located at the nozzle and into the nozzle, thus changing a direction of the pressurized gases expelled by the booster. The integrated actuation system also selectively directs propellant from the storage reservoir through a peripherally-located outlet of the integrated actuation system, to produce thrust at an external periphery of the projectile, thus diverting the projectile. The integrated actuation system may also selectively direct propellant to a nozzle actuation system for positioning the nozzle, to a stage separation system for separating portions of the projectile, or to a power generator for generating electric power for the projectile.

A rocket is provided and includes booster stages at a rear of the nose cone, the booster stages being configured for propelling the nose cone in a propulsion direction and a divert control system housed entirely in the nose cone for controlling an orientation of the propulsion direction.

Some embodiments pertain to a projectile and method that includes a flight vehicle and a propulsion system attached to the flight vehicle. The propulsion system includes a plurality of motors that propel the projectile. A guidance system is connected to the propulsion system. The guidance system ignites an appropriate number of the motors to adjust the speed of the projectile based on the location of the projectile relative to a desired destination for the flight vehicle. In some embodiments, the flight vehicle is a kinetic warhead. The projectile may be an interceptor that includes a first propulsion stage, a second propulsion stage and a third propulsion stage that includes the third propulsion system. The number of booster motors that will be ignited by the guidance system depends on the speed that the projectile needs to be adjusted to in order to maneuver the projectile to a desired location.
