An automatic zoom-sensing riflescope display adapter (RDA) system can illuminate an iris of a user with a beam from a light emitter. The RDA system can activate a display which includes at least one graphical element visible by the user through an eyepiece. Additionally, the RDA system can focus an image of the iris on a sensor. The RDA system can determine a diameter of the iris from the image of the iris using an iris analyzer. The RDA system can develop a calibration table that correlates the diameter of the iris to a zoom level of an optical scope. The RDA system can estimate the zoom level of the optical scope from the diameter of the iris via the calibration table. Additionally, the RDA system can adjust, to match the zoom level, a font size of the at least one graphical element of the display.

Techniques disclosed herein provide for substantially uniform steering of multiple laser beams of a laser rangefinder having different wavelengths, such as a rangefinder laser beam and a visible laser beam. This can allow a user of the laser rangefinder to use the visible laser beam to bore sight the range-finding laser beam to a weapon onto which the laser rangefinder is mounted. The uniform steering of the multiple laser beams can be done through the utilization of a Risley prism assembly with one or more Risley prisms having a center portion through which one laser beam travels and at least one annulus through which a second laser beam travels.

Embodiments disclosed herein address these and other issues by providing for an optical tag that uses an optical assembly with beam splitters to allow for simultaneous detection and retro-modulation, as well as the use of a camera to facilitate alignment of the optical tag with a laser interrogator. Additional components may be used to allow for a large aperture to be used, to help maximize light received by the optical tag and minimize diffraction of retro-modulated light, which can significantly increase distances at which the optical tag can operate. Moreover, a beam splitter may further be used to balance the light directed toward an optical sensor and a retro-modulator, to help achieve optimal results.

Techniques are disclosed for creating optical systems and devices that provide through-sight information while enabling the optical systems and devices to maintain a small, lightweight form factor. According to certain embodiments of the invention, an optical assembly can include a liquid-crystal display (LCD) disposed between the two prism elements of a Schmidt-Pechan prism at a focal plane of the optical assembly. This allows the LCD to be used to display information by blocking light passing through the optical assembly. Additionally, a light-emitting display, such as a backlit LCD, light-emitting diode (LED) display, or organic LED (OLED) display, can be coupled at a surface of one of the two prism elements of the Schmidt-Pechan prism to provide additional information in low-light environments.

Techniques are disclosed for creating optical systems and assemblies that provide increased field of view (FOV) for light detection by coupling a flip-chip light sensor directly to a condenser lens. According to certain embodiments of the invention, an optical assembly can include a condenser lens with a substantially flat surface optically contacted with a substantially flat surface of a substrate of a flip-chip light sensor. The thickness of the substrate is such that the active area of the light sensor is disposed on a focal plane of the optical system. This enables accurate light detection and increased FOV over conventional techniques.

A retroreflector coupled with a polarization rotator is provided according to some embodiments. The polarization rotator can be designed and/or configured to introduce a fraction of a wavelength phase difference in a received beam of light prior to reflecting the beam of light back toward the source of the light. By switching the state of the polarization rotator a communication signal can be modulated on the return beam of light.
