Ovenware for microwave ovens which contain a composition comprising a susceptor and a thermoplastic or thermoset polymer are improved when the composition also has a thermal conductivity of about 0.7 W/m&#xb0; K. or more. Heat generated by absorption of microwave radiation by the susceptor is more readily conducted to the food being cooked when the thermal conductivity of the composition is high, particularly when the part containing the susceptor is relatively thick. Also described are designs for various pieces of ovenware containing this composition.

Thermotropic liquid crystalline polymers are produced by the reaction of a polyester made from an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a diol, one or more hydroxycarboxylic acids, a stoichiometric excess of an aromatic diol, and a carboxylic acid anhydride. Also disclosed are novel liquid crystalline polymers that may be produced by this process. These liquid crystalline polymers are useful as molding resins and shaped articles thereof are produced. In particular, the articles include films, sheets, containers and portions thereof comprising these LCPs.

Processes are provided for the electrodialysis of a (di)alkali metal salt of an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid to produce a free aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid and the alkali metal hydroxide, in the presence of a selected alkali metal salt. These various embodiments represent efficient and economical methods for recovering the alkali metal hydroxide, as well as the parent organic compound, from these dialkali metal salts. These processes also desirably prevent overvoltage during the electrodialysis.

Process for the isolation of aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids

A first process involves the partial electrodialysis of a dialkali metal salt of an aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid or a dicarboxylic acid to produce the approximate monoalkali metal salt and the alkali metal hydroxide. The monoalkali metal salt is then treated with an acid such as a bisulfate to recover the aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acid or dicarboxylic acid. The resulting inorganic salt such as sodium sulfate may then be electrolyzed to sodium bisulfate and NaOH. A second process involves the electrodialysis at elevated temperatures of a (di)alkali metal salt of p-hydroxybenzoic acid produce free p-hydroxybenzoic acid and the alkali metal hydroxide. These are efficient and economical methods for recovering the acid and alkali metal hydroxide values, as well as the parent organic compound, from these dialkali metal salts.

Process for isolation of dicarboxylic acids and hydroxycarboxlic acids

A polymer cutter with a rotary cutting head in which the cutting edges are on the circumferential periphery of the head, and in which the cutting edges shear rather than slice the polymer is described. The knife blades on the rotary head have a cutting edge angle of greater than 70&deg;. The apparatus is especially useful for cutting thermoplastics and may be used for preparing polymer granules or pellets.

Alkali metal aryloxides may be speedily dried by removing water while the aryloxide is molten. Such dried alkoxides are useful as chemical intermediates. Molten alkali metal aryloxides may be contacted with carbon dioxide to quickly produce the dialkali metal salts of aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids, which upon acidification yield the corresponding aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids. Aromatic hydroxycarboxylic acids are useful as chemical intermediates and as monomers for polymers. Solid metal aryloxides may be reacted with carbon dioxide in a reactor in which the contents, even when pasty, may be agitated so that the reaction is more rapid than in prior methods.
