A golf club head includes a golf club body, the golf club body including a toe portion and a heel portion, the golf club body including a hosel connected to the heel portion, the golf club body defining an external surface area, thereby each portion of the golf club body including a contributing external surface area to the total external surface area of the golf club body; a face connected to a front of the golf club body; a surface covering applied to at least 50% of the sole.

A golf club head is disclosed that comprises a body having a striking face and a sole, wherein a recess is formed in the sole. An insert is located within the sole recess, the insert including a core and an intermediate layer that at least partially separates the core from the recess wall. The intermediate layer has a hardness and a modulus of elasticity that are less than that of the core, such that when the golf club head is used to strike a golf ball, the resulting vibrations are dissipated by compression of the intermediate layer and movement of the core with respect to the intermediate layer.

Disclosed is a set of golf clubs. The clubs are divided into at least a first group and at least a second group of golf clubs. The first group desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of low density metallic material. The second group of golf clubs desirably comprises a plurality of club heads each having a main body of higher density metallic material than the density of the metallic material of the main body of each of the heads of the first group. The first group of clubs desirably comprises lower numbered clubs than the second group of clubs.

The present invention is a golf club head whose engagement surface is formed between an upper metal piece and a lower metal piece, the upper piece being composed of relatively lighter and less dense material and the lower piece being composed of relatively denser and heavier material. The union of the two pieces is along a single unitary plane. By utilizing this type of design, in which two engagement surfaces of different metallic composition are joined on a single plane to create a continuous engagement surface on the club head, the benefits of improved balance and enhanced performance that result from the lower piece being heavier than the upper piece can be achieved without the need to fit a precisely engineered weight into a precut opening in the golf club head, thus making the manufacture of golf club heads easier and more efficient.
