This disclosure provides systems, methods, and apparatus, including computer programs encoded on computer-readable media, for managing wireless local area network (WLAN) density. The WLAN density is managed to limit how many APs can utilize a first portion of a first frequency band in a geographical area. A limit of APs may be based on an estimated amount of interference that would be caused by the APs to an incumbent system that also uses the first portion of the frequency band. The WLAN density control may prevent the estimated amount of interference caused by APs in a geographical area from exceeding a threshold interference level based on the presence of the incumbent system. WLAN density control may involve the AP configuration of a first AP or may involve the density of client devices associated with one or more APs in the geographical area.

Wireless local area network (WLAN) density control

Method and systems are disclosed for qualifying a wireless device as frequency hopping device. In some aspects, an access point (AP) may determine a frequency hopping pattern for the wireless device, and then allocate a sequence of unique resource units to the wireless device based on the frequency hopping pattern. Each of the unique resource units include a different set of frequency subcarriers. The AP may receive a series of uplink orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) transmissions from the wireless device on the allocated sequence of unique resource units.

Frequency hopping in OFDMA wireless networks

Techniques are described for wireless communication at a wireless communication device. One method includes determining an availability of a sub-band of a shared radio frequency spectrum band during a first portion of a distributed channel availability check (CAC); receiving at least one indication that the sub-band is available during remaining portions of the distributed CAC; and communicating over the sub-band based at least in part on determining the sub-band is available during the first portion of the distributed CAC and the at least one indication that the sub-band is available during remaining portions of the distributed CAC.

Techniques for performing a distributed channel availability check in a shared radio frequency spectrum band

Methods, systems, and apparatuses are described for adaptive dwell time for scan procedures. A wireless station (STA) may identify a scan period during which a passive scan procedure is performed on a first channel. The STA may analyze a channel congestion metric during at least a portion of the scan period. The STA may transition from the passive scan procedure to an active scan procedure on the first channel during the scan period based at least in part on the analyzed channel congestion metric.

Dynamic frequency selection channel scan optimizations

A method, an apparatus, and a computer-readable medium for wireless communication are provided. In one aspect, an apparatus is configured to determine whether radar signals are present on one or more channels. The apparatus is configured to transmit a channel feedback report that includes channel information for each of the one or more channels based on the determination of whether radar signals are present on the one or more channels. The channel information for each of the one or more channels includes at least one of a time at which radar signal detection was attempted, a frequency range of a detected radar signal, a set of radar signal characteristics, a received radar vector, a geographical location of the wireless device when radar signal detection was attempted, or an indication of wireless activity.

Channel availability coordination for Wi-Fi and unlicensed bands using radio access network

A wireless device may be configured to operate in one of two modes where each mode uses a different channel list to perform operations in accordance with the IEEE 802.11 standard. In a first mode, the wireless device operates as an access point that sets up channels using one channel list in order to facilitate communications within a basic service set (BSS). In a second mode, the wireless device uses a second channel list to operate as a station and scan for a BSS. The first channel list contains a subset of the channels contained in the second channel list. The channels in each respective channel list may be reconfigured to adapt to changes in the configuration of a BSS and the devices communicating therein.

Wireless channelization

Systems and methods are disclosed for returning RF components which exhibit a mismatch with a coupled load. A tuning circuit may be coupled to a signal path of the RF component, wherein the tuning circuit includes a plurality of loads, a switching element associated with each load, wherein each switching element brings the associated load into and out of the signal path, a control line for each switching element, and a phase stage configured to introduce a phase shift, such as 90&#xb0;, between a first subset of the loads and a second subset of the loads. The disclosure also includes routines for establishing optimum settings for the tuning circuit.

System and method for programmable matching of detuned RF components

A set of global location signals, an SBAS (Satellite Based Augmentation System), or an ACI (ambient country identifier) signal can be used to automatically provide location awareness for a WLAN device. If one of the set of global location signals, the SBAS signal, or the ACI signal is detected, then the WLAN device can configure itself to comply with channel and power settings for the country/region having the detected signal(s). After configuration, the WLAN device can be 'locked' to the country/region having the signal(s), thereby ensuring legal operation of the WLAN device even after subsequent restarts. If one of the signals is not detected, then the WLAN device can be configured in a default mode, e.g. an 'open mode' in which end users can configure the WLAN device by entering a country of operation or a &#x201c;common mode&#x201d; in which the channel and transmit power settings meet global spectrum usage requirements.

Implementing location awareness in WLAN devices

Various regulatory domains promulgate standards to define how wireless devices should operate in certain frequency bands. The 5 GHz spectrum is of particular importance to certain regulatory domains because of radar systems also operating in this spectrum. To avoid interference with such radar systems, wireless devices operating in this spectrum should be able to detect radar and quickly vacate any channels currently used by the radar systems. Techniques are provided for performing startup scans for radar, identifying backup channels for a possible channel switch, and efficiently changing channels in the event of radar detection in the operating channel. These techniques advantageously meet current regulatory standards governing DFS while minimizing network startup delays and disruption to users during a radar event.

Methods for implementing a dynamic frequency selection (DFS) feature for WLAN devices

An ambient country identifier (ACI) signal can be used to automatically provide location awareness for a WLAN device. If an ACI signal is detected, then the WLAN device can configure itself to comply with channel and power settings for the country having the detected ACI signal. After detection of the ACI signal, the WLAN device can be 'locked' to the country having that ACI signal, thereby ensuring legal operation of the WLAN device even after subsequent restarts. If an ACI signal is not detected, then the WLAN device can be configured in a default mode, e.g. an 'open mode' in which end users can configure the WLAN device by entering a country of operation or a &#x201c;common mode&#x201d; in which the channel and transmit power settings meet global spectrum usage requirements.

An antenna is provided with an electronic component or circuit that has a value corresponding to properties of the antenna. A read mechanism reads the value and sets an operational status of a transceiver based on the value. In one embodiment, electronic component is a resistor having a value that identifies the antenna properties. A table may be used to correlate resistor values to different types of antennas or sets of antenna properties. Alternatively, the circuit can be embodied in a microchip that provides a response to a challenge sent by the read mechanism. The response encodes the properties of the antenna. The encoding scheme includes values from the challenge. Alternatively, the response is a code that is indexed into a table of antenna properties. In one embodiment, the antenna is connectorized.

Method and apparatus for insuring integrity of a connectorized antenna

In a channel switching technique, if the new channel is radar-exempt, then normal operation commences on the new channel. If the new channel is non-radar-exempt, then normal operation commences on a temporary radar-exempt channel and an aggregate background scan can be performed on the new channel. If no radars are detected using the aggregate background scan, then operation is switched from the temporary radar-exempt channel to the new channel. This channel switching technique minimizes disruption to users during a radar event.
