A device can screen swallowing safety and swallowing efficiency. The device includes a processor configured to receive accelerometry data, determine a an A-P and S-I signal summed spectrogram from the accelerometry data, and perform one or more of identifying a missing swallow, identifying that the data was clipped from the start, identifying that the data was clipped from the end, or identifying that the data contains noise. The device can have a user interface configured to provide one or more outputs including at least one of audio or graphics based on these identifications. If the data does not contain these signal quality issues, the device can compare the data against preset classification criteria defined for each of swallowing safety and swallowing efficiency and thus classify each of the swallowing events with a swallowing safety classification and a swallowing efficiency classification.

Methods and devices for determining signal quality for a swallowing impairment classification model

Apparatuses for detecting swallowing disorders and methods for using same are provided. In a general embodiment, the apparatuses include a disposable sensor base and a sensor that is received by the disposable sensor base. The sensor base includes a sensor interface having a predetermined cut-away shape and a directionally-keyed mating surface. The sensor includes a handle portion having a shape that corresponds to the predetermined shape of the sensor interface, a support portion configured to be received by the directionally-keyed mating surface when the sensor is inserted into the sensor interface, and electronics configured to collect data sensed by the sensor. The present disclosure is directed to apparatuses and methods for diagnosing a swallowing dysfunction. The apparatuses may include a multi-parametric dysphagia analysis system in a plastic foil. The analysis systems may be smart sensing systems that are flexible, lightweight, and based on substrates having low-cost printed electronics technologies thereon. The methods may include measurement and classification of non-invasive parameters that may be indicative of a swallowing dysfunction or the probability of same. In a general embodiment, the methods include placing a sensor on a patient for measurement of at least one parameter associated with the patient's swallowing profile. The measured parameter is then analyzed and compared with several known normal and dysphagic swallowing profiles to provide an indication of the probability of an underlying swallowing dysfunction.
