A de-multiplexer () for separating two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation includes a volume () having a path therethrough for receiving electromagnetic radiation, an input () for directing two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation to be incident upon the volume, a control source () of electromagnetic radiation arranged to generate a time-dependent control field. The volume is arranged and the time-dependent control field is shaped such that, when the two co-propagating modes of electromagnetic radiation and the time-dependent control field are incident upon the volume contemporaneously, the time-dependent control field causes the volume to accept one of the two modes of electromagnetic radiation onto a mode of the volume without any parametric non-linear optical interaction taking place and to reflect or transmit the other of the two modes of electromagnetic radiation, so to spatially and/or temporally separate the two modes of electromagnetic radiation from each other.

De-multiplexer and method of separating modes of electromagnetic radiation

Apparatus include an optical cavity including an optical coupling portion situated to couple an optical signal input field to an intracavity optical signal field and an optical control input field to an intracavity optical control field, wherein the optical cavity includes a nonlinear optical medium that mediates a selective exchange of at least one predetermined temporal mode between the intracavity optical signal field and an intracavity optical register field based on a nonlinear phase-matched interaction between the intracavity optical signal, control, and register fields and selectable field characteristics of the optical control input field.

Temporal modes of electromagnetic radiation using nonlinear optical cavities and shaped laser pulses

An optical data signal can be sampled by linearly combining the optical data signal with optical sampling pulses, and delivering the combination to first and second balanced detectors. The optical data signal and the optical sampling pulse are configured to have a first phase difference at the first balanced detector and a second phase difference at the second balanced detector. Typically, a difference between the first phase difference and the second phase difference is configured to be about 90 degrees. In-phase and quadrature balanced detector outputs can be combined as a sum of squares to produce a linear sampling signal representative of data signal intensity, and the sample pulses can be configured to temporally step through the optical data signal so that a sampled representation of the optical data signal is obtained.
