The invention relates to a bidirectional optical amplifier array (VA) which is preferably used in a passive optical network (PON) system, is disposed between a first line termination (OLT) and a second line termination (ONU), and is penetrated by an optical downstream signal (OSD) in one direction and an optical upstream signal (OSD) in the opposite direction. Said optical amplifier array is composed of a first part with two branching and combining units (Dand D), a unidirectional optical amplifier (E), and a transponder (T) in which the optical downstream signals and upstream signals (OSU and OSD) are separately amplified. The two signals (OSU and OSD) that run in opposite directions are amplified in a bidirectional amplifier (E) in a second part. A constant gain is maintained in the bidirectional optical amplifier (E) by means of the continuous downstream signal (OSD) such that the amplifier can be operated in stable conditions for the upstream signal (OSU) regardless of occurring bursts. In another embodiment, a splitter (S) is integrated into the inventive amplifier array (VA).

Bidirectional optical amplifier arrangement

The invention relates to a bandpass filter (OFI) which is mounted downstream of an optical amplifier (OV) and allows noise to be largely reduced. In order for said bandpass filter to be able to optimally receive burst signals (BS, BS, . . . , BSN) transmitted by several user devices (ONT, ONT, . . . , ONTN) also in a central node (OLT), the bandpass filter is set to the respective received carrier frequencies (TFto TFN). Because of time constraints, this is possible only if the carrier frequencies (TF, . . . ) or associated filter setting values (FE, . . . ) have already been stored and the bandpass filter is preset.

In an optical fiber communication system, for signal monitoring a transparent optical network (all-optical networks), i.e. a system without digital intermediate regeneration, the bit error probability (BEP) is calculated by dismodulating and sampling the signal and generating an amplitude histogram. This histogram serves mainly for modeling the signal distortions. A family of amplitudes that represent the average of a noise-infested sub-signal is determined from the histogram for each status of the signal (logical '0' or '1'). The variance of the individual noise signal overlaid on every amplitude value is calculated from the parameters of the receiver as well as from the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR). The bit error probability is calculated with adequate precision from these parameters.
